(Got
up at) 9 20/.. / (Went
to bed at) 12 25/..
Rainy
morning – F 68° at 10 20/..
Breakfast
at 10 3/4. Fair about 12 1/2, and Mrs. Norcliffe
and the 2 Daltons off at 12 40/.. to Dunnington to search the registers about a
Tobias Jenkins.
Then
came up to my room. At 1, lightning and
loud peals of thunder and very heavy rain. Read to page 68, Working Man’s Companion –
very clever, interesting little book.
Afterwards
a little while at my accounts, settling expenses.
Tib
and Charlotte came to me to tell me of
Doctor Travis paying attention to Esther, and she seeming by no means
disinclined. Said I should not hesitate
to communicate my fancies on such a subject. Tib came and sat with me some time.
Then
wrote about as follows: ‘Sir, I shall be much obliged to you to let me know as
soon as you can on what days during this month and next month you expect to have
a steam vessel going to the Giant’s Causeway or to any part of Ireland. Will you be so good as direct to me, Miss
Lister, Mrs. Norcliffe’s, Langton Hall near Malton, Yorkshire? I am, Sir, etc.
etc. etc., A Lister.’
Sent
George off soon after 3 to Malton with a letter of Tib’s to Norcliffe and 2nd
letter ‘To the Head Clerk of any steam vessel office, Glasgow N.B.’
Tib
with me again. Gave her the two little
barège fichus for herself and Charlotte.
Dressed – dinner at 5 1/2. We 3 sat after dinner till Mrs. Norcliffe and the Daltons returned at 8 1/4.
With
Tib in her room from 9 to 10. Gave her
the tortoise shell and gold inlaid buckle.
Mrs.
Norcliffe went off to bed almost directly.
Charlotte and I sat 3/4 hour tête-à- tête, and came up to bed at 11 10/..
, she with me in my room 1/4 hour.
Vide
line 3 of today – rain more or less till about 5, afterwards fair and pretty
fine. F 68° now at 12 tonight.
