1831 July

Saturday 23

(Got up at) 8 1/2  /  (Went to bed at) 12 5/..

F 61 1/2 at 8 25/.. , and very fine sunny morning.  Looking over the map of Scotland.  Down to breakfast at 10 40/.. Came to my room at 11 1/4 from then till 1 50/.. , at my accounts, private Daybook, and traveling ditto.

Changed my dress. From 2 20/.. to 4 35/.., walked with Charlotte to Grimstone and back, said to be 3 miles there.

Dinner at 5 25/.. Mr. and two Miss Greens of Grimstone dined with us and staid till 10 10/.. good sort of vulgarish people whom the Norcliffes like.  Had music piano and harp, a great godsend.

Very civil letter this morning from Messers Hammersley, inclosing passport good for 6 months for Holland and Belgium in the name of the king of the Netherlands, and letter of credit for £500 on Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Brussels.  Saying they had not received the £500 from Messers Rawson, but were sure, as I had ordered it to be paid, it would soon arrive.

Letter also from Mr. Lawton the Proctor, York, to say he had sent off the instructions for my will, was flattered by my confidence, but advised my writing even the instructions in my own hand, and shewing the will when made to clever counsel.

On coming up to bed, some time in Charlotte’s room, then in Tib’s with her and Bell Dalton, then a few minutes again with Charlotte, and came to my room at 11 5/..  Wrote the above of today.  F 72° at 2 p.m. and 68° now at 11 1/2 tonight.  Fine day though a very little light rain about 10 a.m.
