 1831 July

Sunday 24

(Got up at) 8 1/2  /  (Went to bed at) 12 5/..

Half hour dawdling and playing with Tib.

Very fine morning – F 63° at 9 20/.. At breakfast at 10 1/4.

Letter 3 pages from Mariana, Leamington, in answer to mine of the 17th.  Very bad account of William Milne: ‘my firm belief is that nothing less than a miracle can get him back to York – at present the hemorrhage recurs upon the slightest movement, and it is now four days since he left his bed . . . . . . . In this state of affairs you see how impossible it is for me to decide upon my own movements.’ Thinks I had best go to Shibden and get done what I can. My last letter will give the answer on this point.  I begin to fear we shall hardly get off anywhere together at all.

Church at 11.  Mr. Simpson did the duty.  Preached 23 minutes from Deuteronomy xxxii 29? that a man should know to think of his latter end – Asleep.

Afterwards a little conversation with Bell, then in the garden eating gooseberries, then about 2 hours with Mrs. Norcliffe in her room talking of Mariana, the whole affair of her marriage and defending Charles as well as I could – give the diabhal his due.

Dressed.  Dinner at 5 1/4.  Coffee with Mrs. Norcliffe.

Came to my room at 7 20/.., and in 55 minutes wrote 3 pages and one to my aunt to say I meant to leave here on Thursday, hoped to get all done in York and be off if room for me and George, in night mail of that day if not in the next mail that has room enough to spare, and be at Shibden to breakfast on Friday.  Hoped my father was quite recovered.  Would not enter into plans; would leave all to be talked over when we met.  And wrote also (in the 55 minutes) note to Mr. Lawton the Proctor, to go tomorrow by Charles Dalton to acknowledge the receipt of his letter of the instructions and say I expected to be at York on Thursday and hoped to find him at home about 2 or from 2 to 3 in the afternoon of that day. Would therefore leave any remark I had to make till then.  Then had Burnett for a little while.  Wrote the above of today and went downstairs at 9.  Came up to bed at 11.  Fine day – F 65° now at 12 5/.. tonight.
