1830 November

Sunday 28

(Got up at) 6 10/.. /  (Went to bed at) 12 5/..

Ready in an hour.  An hour cutting open books and reading first 16 pages, volume 1, History of the Jews (Constable’s Miscellany) and a few pages, volume 3 of the same.

At my desk at 8 1/4. Breakfast at 10, then reading Galignani’s Observer of today till 11 1/2. Read prayers and one of Ogden’s sermons from 12 to 12 35/.. Then talking to my aunt till 1 1/2.

Out at 1 50/.. Drove to the Embassy.  Found there Lady Isabella Blachford, Mr. Hamilton, two other ladies and a gentleman and Lady Stuart in the room.  Near an hour there, and then went with Lady Stuart (Miss Hiriott and the children and Mr. Hamilton of the party and I drove forward, in vain, for Mrs. Hamilton if she was returned home) to No. 21 rue de Cléry, to see the duchess de Berry’s things, all to be seen there before the sale to commence on Wednesday. Then left my card for the Sénés (who were out), and sat 20 minutes with Madame Galvani, and home at 4 50/..

Found the 2 boys, Messers Samuel Waterhouse and John Rawson of Wellhead and Millhouse come.  Dinner at 5 3/4, tea and coffee at 8 1/2, and they went away at 8 3/4.  The one (Waterhouse) is really much more gentlemanly than I expected, and a nice boy enough.  The other has not much to say for himself though 2 years older (i.e. 17) and is not near so gentlemanly.

Then sat talking to my aunt.  Rather leaning to the possibility of staying here.  Say I think it would not make more than ₤25 a year difference and that plus two hundred would do. I was thinking of the troisieme here unfurnished at fifteen hundred francs a year.

Came to my room at 11 1/4.  F 44° at 8 1/4 a.m. and damp almost drizzling morning. Great deal of rain in the night – heard it raining heavily about 5 this morning.  Soft muggy day –  F 46° and fine but dampish night at 11 25/..

Cameron was asked to dine at the embassy today.  Said I could not spare her for that at two, but she might and did go to tea at five.
