July
Thursday
14
(Got
up at) 9 1/2 /
(Went to bed at) 1 20/..
Quarter hour
washing stains from sheet and night chemise yet still down to breakfast
at 11 1/2.
F
68° at 10 and fine morning. Staid downstairs
talking to 1 or other till 12 50/..
Then
(but Mrs. Norcliffe came and interrupted about an hour) wrote and sent off by
George at 3 1/2 three pages and the ends and under the seal to ‘Mrs. Lawton,
the Priory, Leamington Warwickshire.’ Should have written sooner had I known what
to propose. Had planned an excursion that
would suit us both, but should not explain that. She might say truly she had promised me a
fortnight at least at my own disposal, but knew not how I should dispose of it.
Could she meet me at Leeds on the 25 or 26th, in which case would only be ourselves
and George, leaving carriages at Miss Pearson’s. Price £30 to £40 at most. Should have no carriage till the 2nd of next
month. If she preferred waiting for this
and taking both the servants, I would go to Shibden for a few days in the
interim. The price would be about double.
Quite indifferent to me. Did not think
of society – might not see a soul we knew.
Had best perhaps be off as soon as we could, though I had just written
to say it was uncertain whether I could be in London or not the end of next month. Yet I was anxious to avoid an unnecessary
delay. Nobody needed know which way we went
from Leeds, whether to Shibden or not. I
should not say a word about it to any one.
Wrote
the above of today. Tib came and sat with
me. Dressed – dinner at 5 1/2 – sat downstairs
all the evening. Read 122 pages, volume
1 Tour in Holland,1789. Came to my room at 11 1/4. Charlotte with Tib came 11 50/..
Then looking over map of Holland. Think of taking Mariana there instead of to the Giant’s Causeway?? But shall keep all this to myself.
Fine
day – F 68° now at 1 20/.. tonight.
