1830 November

Thursday 11

(Got up at) 7   / (Went to bed at) 1 25/..

Breakfast. Off from La poste, Rouvray, at 9 19/.. Hotel du Léopard, Auxerre, at 5 13/.. A few drops of rain and the dark frightened us back (from the cathedral) to the Inn.

Dinner at 6 1/4.  Afterwards sat spelling over newspapers and I nodding.

Coffee at 9 1/2.   Sat cozing about Lady Bute and the story of the opera box – her taking a share with old Lady Stuart, then wanting to be off, then angry because Lady Dudley, whom she sent, did not happen to have the best place.  Wanting to play the head of the family over them. Lady Stuart de Rothesay had gone that night out of kindness, to take Vere and Lady Bute’s niece, and she felt herself offended and took it up and would and did have an apology.  The Miss Berrys have four and twenty hundred a year.  They spent a thousand pounds in Paris in five months.

Charlotte with me this morning from Rouvray to Vermanton, and Lady Stuart with me (in my carriage 1st time), from then to Auxerre.  We talked of Vere and Henry Yorke and Miss MacLean. I hinted gently at her little jealousy of my knowing Vere better than she did, and she hardly forgave my differing so about Henry.  Tonight flattered her gently on her being able to repeat so much poetry, on being so good a mimic, telling a story well, having the poetry of feeling, being in my good sense of the word romantic and in reality not worldly, not at all moreso than necessary.  Hinted at my being altogether agreeably surprised in her character.

F 52° at 8 a.m. and fine, frosty, sunny morning. Fine day, then came on about 6 and afterwards rainy evening.  F 54° now at 12 3/4 tonight.

Came to my room at 12 1/4.
