1830 November

Thursday 25

(Got up at)   6 3/4 /  (Went to bed at)  12 25/..

Went into the wood cellar.  There must be 3 voies left, and some very good large wood.

Went out at 8 5/.., round by the quais to rue Saint Victor.  Paid my 2nd quarter’s rent.  Just went into the Jardin des Plantes; saw and just spoke to M. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire walking across from the galerie de botanique part, carrying fossil skeleton of crocodile found at Caen that he said was bien interessant – très precieux.  Spoke to Neuman the gardener about really doing something at botany. Can do nothing he always says, sans dessicher, on how to manage it.  Told him I had been in Spain and at the top of Mt. Perdu the only lady that ever was.  Mentioned that I had some thought of going to Algiers.

Sauntered home and came in at 11 – breakfast – dressed.  Fire in my bedroom 1st time this season of my having a fire at all.  Tidying books from 12 20/.. to 2 55/.. The 8 voies wood ordered yesterday came this morning.

Letter from Mariana Lawton, about 1 – did not read it till 3. 3 pages and the ends, and 2 or 3 lines under the seal – widish writing done after 12 at night.  Quite well.  Would have written sooner, but had been so wandering about, durst not have my letters forwarded and therefore did not get my last till her return home.  Had been at the Ackers’s, those terrible Ackerses! Bath and Cheltenham, Leamington for a day or 2, and going there for the winter the 1st of next month.

From 3 10/.. to 6, wrote out 10th, 11th, and 12th instante mense.  Dinner at 6 10/.. Came to my room at 7 3/4.  Wrote all but the few last lines of the 13th instante mense then asleep till 9 50/..  Coffee immediately, talking about Shibden.  My aunt to have red room and north room (instead of parlour and back room fitted up) and made bedroom and sitting room of the former, and give Marian her option about MacDonald’s going there or not.   I had before mentioned that I should like to see the vacant troisième of this house and said tonight I should even like to take it for my things.

Came to my room at 11 50/.. Very fine frostyish day, fine frosty night – F 37° at midnight, and about the same at 8 a.m.
