 1831 July

Tuesday 19

(Got up at) 8 10/..  /  (Went to bed at) 11 55/..

F 64° at 8 20/..  and very fine morning.

Down to breakfast at 10 1/4.  Sat long at the breakfast table, talking to Charlotte and then Mrs. Norcliffe about the former’s going to Paris.

Came to my room about 12 1/2.  Had Charlotte till 1, then Tib for a little while.  Then wrote in answer to Myers: ‘Sir, I have just received your letter, and beg you to keep the landaulet for me.  Of course, you stand to all repairs, and will take care that all is right at Starting.  You shall hear from me again how the carriage is to come.  I am, Sir, etc. etc. etc., A Lister.’

Myers’s letter this morning said the carriage Mr. St. Andrew Ward had is engaged at £2 a week for an uncertain time, but a good landaulet will be at home on the 26th or before, which Mr. Jonathan Gray has on a journey.  2 people want it for the lakes.  Will give them no answer till mine is received.  Changed my dress.  Gave my letter to ‘Mr. Myers, Coach maker, Little Stonegate, York’ to George to take to the post at 2 1/4.  Changed my dress.

Went out with Charlotte at 2 40/.. Walked on the Birdsall road – She a very bad getter over the ground.  Back in 1 1/2 hour, then returned and gave myself a warming in 25 minutes more and back at 4 35/..

Found Cobb the apothecary with Tib.  He recommended leeches.  She would not hear of them.  I answered for their being put on.

Dressed – dinner at 5 20/..  Coffee with Tib (Mrs. Norcliffe and Charlotte too with us almost all the time) from 9 to 9 3/4 while eight leeches were put on, and the white broad poultice was put on after them. Then downstairs 3/4 hour, then 1/4 hour at Tib’s bedside, and came to my room at 10 3/4, at which hour F 65°.

Fine, cool, sunless, pleasant day.  Fire in the sitting room this evening.

Speaking this morning of  lodgings in London, it was said that Mr. and Miss Belcombe were in a nice respectable house with Major Bayley when in town on his divorce business.  36 Mount Street, Grosvenor Square.  Plenty of room for all of them and Major Bayley’s 2 servants at 3 1/2 guineas a week.  I could have enough at 2 1/2 guineas as said at 1st, but thinking of my 2 servants, said I should want the whole at 3 1/2 guineas.  They lived from a cook’s shop opposite and had a good plain dinner for all the party for 5/. or 2/. a dish. Wrote the last 12 lines till 11 20/.. Then ten minutes burning cousin papers.
