Tuesday
26
(Got
up at) 8 1/2 /
(Went to bed at) 12 20/..
F 65° at 9, and very fine morning. Down to breakfast at 10 (10 10/.. by the hall clock). Only Mr. Marsh and Burnett making tea. The rest came, first Mrs. Marsh then Mrs. Norcliffe and so on by degrees. Mr. Marsh and his sons and daughter all off at 11 1/4 to see Castle Howard. It seems they all came in Furnishes’ landau and kept the pair of horses to be ready to take them out today and back again tomorrow.
Sat
downstairs with Mrs. Norcliffe and Mrs. Marsh and Charlotte till about 12 1/2. Then meant to go out, but Mrs. Norcliffe came
and stood talking near an hour and then came Mrs. Marsh and sat with us till 2
35/.. She and Mr. Marsh do not much like
the Poores – did not visit them – thought them fine. He, Sir Edward, had run through one fortune and
may perhaps be running through his present. Had given about £20,000 for
Cufuells, only a house (though a very large handsome one) and garden and grounds. Had not more than £3,000 a year, and no ready
money, that £20,000 out of it cannot be convenient.
Changed
my dress. Then came Tib for a little while.
Told how the Daltons (a great secret) had
been quizzing the Marshes, particularly Mr. Marsh whom they call a learned fool
but a very good old man.
Wrote
all but the 1st 3 lines of yesterday and so far of today and went out at 3
50/60. Went into the garden and ate gooseberries,
then sauntered about the field before the house and sat slumbering between the
2 trunks of an ash tree.
Came
in at 5 1/2. Dressed. dinner at 6 5/.. , coffee – tea at 9. Afterwards music.
All
came upstairs at 10 3/4, Charlotte with me in my room till after Tib came.
Very
fine day, very hot day – F 72° at 3 p.m.
