1831 July
Wednesday
20
(Got
up at) 8 3/4 / (Went to bed at) 12 25/..
Cross last night
thinking of Mariana.
F
64° at 9, small rain and dull morning. Appearance
of having been much rain in the night and not long ago. Fair at 9 3/4. Small rain again at 10 for a little while.
Tib’s
foot better for the leeches.
Breakfast
at 10 1/2. Came up to my room at 11 10/.. From 11 1/4 to 2 1/2, at my private accounts (French, from Friday 13 May to end of
page 29).
Then
changed my dress. Went out with Charlotte
at 2 55/.. Charlotte much improved in
her walking. Went to the Birdsall village
gate, and back at 4 35/.., but had considerably shortened the way by going
across the fields by Foster’s farm.
Dressed. Dinner at 5 40/.. Captain Newberry dined with
us and, in consequence of the very rainy, evening staid all night. Very
good violin player I daresay, but vulgarish little jolly if feline man.
Had
my coffee with Tib and Bell Dalton and Charlotte, with us in Tib’s room. Her feet very much better for the leeches. Cobb said would want no more and be well in a
week if not used too soon.
Tea
at 9 and then the 2 Daltons played harp and piano. All came upstairs at 10 1/2, Charlotte and I and (for a little while at Bell) with Tib
in her room till 11 25..
Rainy
morning till between 10 and 11, then fair and finish till about 6 or soon after
and from then very rainy evening and night – F 66° now at 11 3/4 p.m.
Looking
at map of Scotland.
