1831 July

Wednesday 27

(Got up at) 9 5/..   /  (Went to bed at)  1 5/..

F 68 1/2 at 9 1/4, and fine morning.

Down to breakfast at 10 20/.. Mrs. Norcliffe had just had letter from Mariana, giving still worse account than before of William Milne, but they meant to try to set off home with him as this morning, and hoped if possible to be in York on Friday. In this state of things, Mariana could not let Mrs. Milne come off without.  Anne ill and Eliza ill. Could fix nothing respecting any tour with me; her services might be wanted as a nurse in York or at Scarborough.  Would write to me at Shibden.

This made me change my plans of going tomorrow, and determined to be here another day, and go to the Duffins on Friday, that the Duffins would have room for me. After breakfast, wrote note to Mrs. Duffin to ask if she could take me in on Friday night and mentioning the chance of seeing Mariana, and the bad account of William Milne. Wrote note also to Mr. Lawton to say sorry, unexpectedly prevented being in York tomorrow. Expected to be there on Friday and should be glad if he could call on me that evening any time after 8 at Mr. Duffin’s.

All the Marshes off at 12 1/2.  Took my note to ‘Mrs. Duffin, Micklegate, York’ and enclosed in it my note to ‘Mr. Lawton, Proctor, Petergate York.’

Sat downstairs writing 3 pages to my aunt mentioning my change of plan; not to expect me before Sunday morning to breakfast, and should then either see myself or have a letter from me.  If Myers a man of his word, and would really have the carriage ready on the 2nd of next month, might be tempted to wait for it.

Put on my habit and off at 2 1/4 with Charlotte in the gig. I drove to Malton bridge then sent Richard to the post with my letter to ‘Mrs. Lister,  Shibden Hall, Halifax’ and drove to Scott’s White Wall Corner.  No vacancy at present; probably would have one in a month or 2, in September after Doncaster races, and would be glad to oblige Mrs. Norcliffe and take my protégé.  Said he was a well-principled, steady, slim boy of 12, or 13, or 14.  Could read and write and account pretty well (John Booth’s son Joseph).

Then drove by Menethorpe and Firby to Kirkham Abbey (beautiful or very pretty drive) and back at 4 20/..

Dressed – dinner at 5 – coffee – tea.  Making notes from and reading the last 20 or 30 pages, Volume 1, Ireland’s Tour in Holland in 1789 (vide 14th instante mense).

Everybody went upstairs to bed before 10 except Tib at 10 1/4 and Charlotte and I sat up till 11 1/2.  Read, giving her memoranda of excursions in the environs of Paris, and wrote her copy of French note to ask for a billet from the director of the Travaux Publics de Paris.  ‘Madame Norcliffe and Madame Milne, dames Anglaises, offrent leurs civilités très empressées à Monsieur le Directeur des Travaux Publics and le prient de voulois bien leurs accordes la permission de voie les travaux publics de Paris. Monsieur Monsieur le Directeur des Travaux Publics de Paris, Paris’

Tried on one of Tib’s evening gowns. She and Charlotte said how thin I was.

Wrote all the above of today till 12 25/..., at which hour F 69°.  Very fine day – fine air while we were out, and no sun.
