1832 March

Monday 5

9 50/..

12 10/..

A cross thinking of Miss Hobart just before getting up.

Fine, sunny morning. F 56° at 9 50/.. in my room and 52 12° at 10 25/.. in the balcony –

Breakfast at 10 40/.. – Came upstairs at 12 10/.. Staid dictating to Miss H- a letter to her banker to inquire if he had received on her account the proceeds of the sale of six hundred plus consols (sold in August last)

From 12 1/2 to 1 3/4, wrote the latter 3/4 page 3 and long ends, and finished my letter begun on Friday to Mrs. Norcliffe.

‘Now that I am more accustomed to the air, and suffer from it less, I am more sensible of the merits of Hastings, and mean to patronize it in future’ –  Sussex a fine county – Have seen many parts of it where I should have no objection to live, but resist all persuasions to make myself a home in England out of Yorkshire – This one reason which keeps me to my continental plans –

Shall not mind 3 days quarantine, and have not given up the thought of getting to Paris next month.  ‘All beyond  that is blank.’  No fixed idea what I shall do – ‘Much more will depend on my friends than on myself – I am sufficiently careless about it; and so long as they take me over new ground, they may turn the horses heads east, west, north, or south’ – but will not go far without telling Mrs. N- in what direction – Have hired an Italian courier – ‘But there is no end of one in Paris; and perhaps I may go on dawdling there for some months’ –

Afraid the Norcliffes’ Dutch expedition must ‘fall thro’ for the present – Will send Isabella a few memoranda from my Dutch notebook –  On account of my aunt etc.’my next sojourn on the continent may not be very uninterruptedly long’ –

‘It is very good of you to inquire after my invalid friend here – We have all had very bad colds; and she has suffered from hers a good deal – I trust, however, she will be able to get out again in the course of a day or 2, and then we shall do very well’ – Talk of going to Beachy Head (16 or 18 miles) by sea – Can have a nice little 10 or 12 tons vessel and 3 men at a guinea a day –

Mention the Lawtons being to arrive at Cheltenham today – ‘I hear Louis Philippe’ (from Sir Wathen Waller the other day) put 3 hundred thousand pounds into our funds the other day, and would gladly be away from Paris –

My best love to the anti-script Isabella, and to you all, and believe me, my dear Mrs. Norcliffe, always affectionately and very truly yours A L –’

Had just written the above of today at 2 10/.. making little notes from Gibbon volume IX – Miss H- came to me about 3 – Went downstairs – Meaning to go out, when Captain Gordon, Royal Navy,. called at 3 50/.. and staid till 5 10/.. – Traveled a great deal – Agreeable person – Brother to Lord Aberdeen –

Then came upstairs – Making notes again from Gibbon – Sent off my letter to Mrs. Norcliffe, Langton hall, Malton, Yorkshire’ and dressed at 6 20/.. – Dinner at 6 3/4 – Music – Coffee at 8 – Played a gammon and a hit at backgammon, and won both – From 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 read aloud from page 354 to 388, Chapter 51 – Volume 9, Gibbon –

Came upstairs at 10 3/4 and to my room at 10 56/..

Very good friends

Fine day – F 59 1/2° at 10 50/.. in my room and 37° at 11 3/4 in the balcony –
