1832 March

Tuesday 20

9 35/..

12 40/..

Very fine morning, F 61° at 9 35/.. in my room and 53 1/2 at 10 1/2 in the balcony –

Downstairs at 10 35/.. Breakfast – Came to my room again at 11 55/..

A little indirect talk rather at each other.  She ended with, she could beat me, but yet I was very good, adding, England with all thy faults . . . . . She bade me repeat the rest.   I said I could, if she would tell it.  She answered, I would rather hear it than say it.  Then said, no,  I don’t mean that, and George came.  Perhaps the fact is, she may find some difficulty for a short while in caring as little for me as she may wish and I may be the first to care the least – Pain in my chest and do not feel well.  Have had more or less tightenings and pain in my chest for some time ever since my last bad cold –

Till 1 1/2 at Scotch tour – Went out with Miss H- at 1 3/4 – Some time at Mr. Wooll’s – Then turned down by the pretty cottage below Mr. North’s, and over a low wall up the hill to Mr. North’s new Lodge and along his newly making carriage road, till turned right up the hill along a pleasant footpath shaded by the hedge from the west wind – Nice new walk to us – Sauntered slowly a little way – In returning, met the two Misses Percivals, oldest and youngest, who did not even return my bow. Nearly at our own, met the 2 Ladies Scott –

Came in about 3 1/2 – My room so full of smoke, sat in the drawing room reading the newspaper till 4 25/.. , when came to my room. Miss H- quite on the conciliatory.  Even kissed me about something or other, but I take it all very quietly.  My heart is easier and I can manage better now – I shall overdo her with douceurs again in a hurry –

From 4 1/2 to 6 1/4 at Scotch journey again – Dressed; dinner at 6 3/4 – in 40 minutes – Music, coffee at 8 1/4 – Won 1 and lost 1 hit at backgammon – From 9 40/.. to 10 3/4 read aloud from page 297 to end of page 332, end of Chapter 56, Volume X, Gibbon –

Came upstairs at 11 1/4.   Only a minute in Miss H-’s room,  but good, proper friends – Settled accounts – Fine day – Wind Southwest – F 62° at 11 3/4 in my room and 41 1/2 at 12 1/2 in balcony.
