1832 March

Tuesday 6

8

12

Finish but windy morning. F 55° at 8 10/.. in my room and 43 1/2 at 8 3/4 in the balcony –

Out at 9 1/4 – walked to the Hare and Hounds (London road) and back at 10 1/4 – High wind and a little rain – blew the rain full in my face all the way back –

Dressed – Breakfast at 10 35/.. –

Talking of her going to Italy.  She proposed my keeping Cameron till we went, and then my taking Norbury, and on our, Miss Hobart and myself, parting, she would get another maid perhaps. Said I, you would not, therefore, be parting with Norbury forever. She looked significantly, but, said I, nobody would be for this. They would not let you go without a maid to yourself.  You might then as well have another carriage.  The posting would be the same thing.  Two people more would require another postboy, that your posting would be five francs a post anyway, and another carriage would give more room.  She does not quite like this, but will not too suddenly leave myself without maid to myself and with only one carriage.

Came upstairs at 12 10/.. – Read the paper – Had hair done etc. till 1 – From then to 6 1/4 making out and writing out Mariana’s account from 1 January 1829 to the present time and have down to part of last year –

Miss H- came to me twice for a little while. Very good friends.

Very cold in my room today – The high, boisterous wind full against my ill-shutting windows – Sat in my great coat with shawl underneath it and plaid cloak and great shawl over my knees and my night cap on, such were the current of wind that staved me close to a good fire –

Dressed – Dinner at 6 3/4 in 35 minutes –

She on the sofa a little and I sitting by her.  A little music – Coffee at 8 1/2 – From 9 to 9 1/2, played and won one hit at backgammon – From 9 1/2 to 11 3/4, read aloud from page 388 to 429, Chapter 51, Volume IX, Gibbon –

Came upstairs at 10 55/.. and to my room at 11, at which hour, F 58° and 45° at 11 3/4 in the balcony – Rainy, windy, stormy day and evening and night, and wind high and boisterous all the day and now –
