February

Monday 11

8 20/..

11 1/4

She a little on the amoroso last night but just asked me to be quiet, and I was so directly, and turned away and went to sleep.  She was rather in the same way this morning and came to her own place, that is, upon me, but the castor oil she took last night began to work and she left me not to return, and I got up –

Finish, soft morning – very windy, boisterous night – Breakfast at 9 1/2 –

Miss Walker in answer to 2 letters from her sister yesterday wrote to say she was better – Had no faith in medicine, as her complaint was chiefly in her mind.

Chaise came for Miss Rawson, and letter to say her mother and one sister were gone off to London, not expecting to find her mother’s father (ætatis 86) alive –

Martha Booth came back in the chaise after being a fortnight at Gledholt – Mrs. Rawson to let her know if she wanted her again and quite satisfied with her –

Asked Miss R- to come and see me – said if I saw Dr. Belcombe, I would speak of her complaint without naming her, and, if he said anything particular, would write it to her mother – It is a three years' stoppage of her cousin, but there is no marked symptom of suffering from it –

Sorry Miss R- could not stay till Friday morning as agreed – She was off before 12 –

Out with Miss W- at 1 – Brought her along my walk to the house at 1 3/4 – She sat a little with my aunt and father and Marian, had a sandwich and wine, and then off again and at Lidgate at 3 – Miss W- dined in 10 minutes and then I walked with her to Cliff hill to look at her plantations that Sykes pruned, and then sat 20 minutes with Miss W- at Cliff hill and then back to Lidgate and sat with Miss W- till near 7 – She is now sorry for having said no, said she had been a foolish little thing, and seemed low at the thought of parting.

Miss W- wanted me to stay, but I said I could not – In fact, staying all night there never suits me – I do not sleep really well, and my bowels always get wrong, so they have been the last 3 mornings that I have been there – Besides all at home is neglected.  Oh, that she was gone and I once more at liberty

Home in 1/2 hour at 7 25/.. – Dinner at 7 3/4 – Afterwards, came to my room and wrote the last 4 lines of Saturday and the whole of yesterday, and so far of today, and went downstairs at 9 1/2 and came up again at 10 1/4 – 0

Fine day, but very windy – Could [hardly] walk as we came here this morning – F 49 1/2° now at 10 3/4 p.m.
