1 5/..

Incurred a little cross thinking of π Mariana just before getting up.

Very fine morning. F 53° and Réaumur 9 1/2° at 8 a.m. –  Breakfast over and had read the whole of the Hamburg Reporter of the 11th instante mense.  The King of Spain died on the 29th ultimo – at 10 1/2 –

Before and after at German – Finished dressing – Out at 11 55/.. to Comtesse Blucher’s – 20 minutes with Miss Ferrall – going to have their audience of the Queen at 1 1/2 today so nobody could walk – The Comtesse taking her harp lesson –

Walked to the King’s garden – Sauntered about there – Fine bronze statue of a lion having just sprung upon a horse prostrate and in the act of tearing his side – Then along the ramparts –

Home at 2 – In the newspaper this morning, taken from sketches of Turkey, observed that oil poured on waves will allay them and will make a small trinket visible at the bottom of 6 or 8 feet deep water –

At German till 4 20/.. –

Dressed – off in a remise (to dine at the de Hagemanns’) at 5 – Mr. Nissan dined there – Coffee – Tea – In the course of the evening came the Russian Secretary of Legation?  Monsieur Sarmento introduced his successor, Monsieur Fana, the new Portugueze Chargé d’Affaires, a very dark man speaking bad French they said, so on that account perhaps, scarce speaking at all – M. Oxholme, the young Danish officer, came and 2 more I did not know – Tea –

Home at 11 – At German till 12 1/4 – Had written out and taken with me a passage (page 20 latter 1/2) I could not translate – neither could M. de Hagemann, but M. Nissen did it – Asked him (Monsieur N- ) to get me a German to come for a couple of hours a day – Very civil about it –

Fine day till near 5 and then a little small rain and damp small rainy evening – F 54 1/2° now at 12 25/.. tonight – The stove lighted (1st time this season) at the de H-s’ – Should have they said 13° of Réaumur in the room, and Lady Harriet said 15° was comfortable – Monsieur de H- had had a letter from Lady Stuart by a sea Captain from Iceland who had dined with him, met him at dinner there.
