Very fine morning. F
59° at 7 20/.. a.m.
At
German for about an hour – Breakfast at 9 1/4.
Wrote
little note to ‘The Lady Harriet de Hagemann, 230 Amaliegade.’ Sorry to
miss her yesterday – Had she found my griffonage – to have her footman or mine?
A word or two to let me know and if the
carriage might be at Compte Blucher’s door at 3 50/.. – Sad pity she (Madame de
H-) does not go, at least for our pleasure’s sake – Hope to see her for an hour,
from about 9 to 10 this evening – ‘Very much yours, AL–’
Sent
off my note at 10 1/2, and finished dressing – At German. Monsieur
Christiani from 11 20/.. to 12 35/.. Lesson 10 – but talking of the state of
the country etc., the national bankruptcy in 1812, the adherence to French
(Napoleon) politics, and consequent poverty of the people, etc. etc. so that did
translation afterwards by myself – He would have come again at 2, but I engaged
to dine at the Bluchers’ at 3 – At German till 1 40/.. –
No
writing or particular answer to my note this morning. It just strikes me I had better call on Lady Harriet
before dinner? They are such touchy
people, if I get many friends here I know not how the de Hs will like it –
Intended
being off before 2 but on trying on my new black levantine cloak Madame
Decantes made me, found it 1/8 yard too short and unwearable! Bad silk too – Annoyed – will employ her
no more –
Off at 2 1/2 – Sauntered – at the Bluchers’ before 3 – Compte B- could not leave the field for dinner. Comtesse B-, Miss Ferrall, and M. de Quahlen and the 2 little girls and I Dinner at 3 1/4 – Coffee – And off to the review of the guards – On the field in about 10 minutes at 4 20/.. – Fine-looking regiment – Great many Royal family – Princess Xtn [Christian] very handsome – very affable in speaking to Comtesse B- – Came away at 6 5/.. before all was over – Tea about 8 –
Went
to Lady Harriet at 9
to 10 40/.. – Tea again there – Lady H- had just written me a note to ask me
to dinner tomorrow – Took it from off
the table. In writing, she had
probably thought I ought to have dined with her,
but I took no notice as I had luckily talked all that off on entering and we
were capital friends. She said she had never dined with Countess B and
how civil she was to me, but seemed to think it [not] quite right –
The Bs are
poor. We had soup, cold boiled
corned beef, and spinach with two poached eggs, a couple of ducks and
cauliflowers, and a sweet meat large gateau – Well cooked, but not neat and
stylish as at the de Hs. Miss F and
Count B spar. She can’t take a joke. As disagreeable to them as to me. No, apparently
better to me than to anybody. I
think she must be a little beside herself.
Declares she won’t go to Prince Christian’s tomorrow –
