February
Thursday 7
Very
fine morning, F 52 1/2° at 10 1/2, at which hour, breakfast – Had had Cordingley
1/2 hour cutting my hair –
Mr.
Parker sent up Miss B. [Gorst]’s letter to Miss Bates, giving an almost hopeless
account of Mrs. Veitch – Wrote note of compliments and thanks for my aunt
and returned the letter –
Out
at 11 1/2 – Some time in my walk, then with John getting up 2 thorns and
large crab – and hazel bush, which were, after dinner (had Charles and James
Howarth to help us), planted in Lower brook Ing over against the hut – Busy about
these all the while I was out and did not come in till 6 –
Then
Marian kept me talking above an hour – She had been at Lightcliffe –
Mrs. William Priestley told her story about our misunderstanding – Sorry, but thought
I, not she, ought to apologize, as,
after all, she had said to me about not going into the forbidden room. (Marian
said she was sure I had misunderstood her.) She wondered I should attempt it – I
observed all this only made bad worse – I was sorry to find I had been so stupid
and so impertinent at unawares – but if Mrs. William Priestley named the subject
to me, she should now have apology enough – and so she shall – I will be the
very pink of dignified civility –
Found
note on my desk from Thomas Greenwood, sending me Seaton’s map of
Palestine and book of Explanation to look at, and asking me to fix any hour
today or tomorrow for him to come and for us to look over the farm – Desired
John to call, and give my thanks for the map and say I would return it on Saturday
and to say I had made Washington my Steward and Greenwood might see him on
Saturday and appoint a time with him for their looking over the farm –
Dinner
at 7 1/2 – Wrote the above of today – and read from page 147 to 164, Volume 2,
Lyell’s Geology – Went downstairs at 9 35/60 – Read the Courier – Came upstairs
again at 10 40/..,
at
which hour, F 52° – Very fine, mild day –
