Damp
small rainy morning, F 56 1/2° at 9 and 10 a.m. – Breakfast at 10 10/.. and read
the Hamburg Reporter of the 21st instante mense (no. 720) till 11 1/2 –
Had
had the waiter up – Asked him if he had traveled much – No! He is ætatis 30 and
married, so that he could not go about with me – Would like to get a quieter place
– Would be satisfied with less wages and more sure – He can gain as much as
20 dollars a month here in summer, but in winter, 6 months, perhaps not more
than 6 dollars a month – The money given is divided among all the servants of
the house (10 of them) every 1/2 Year –
Dawdling
over 1 thing or other till 12 10/.. – Finished dressing –
Out
in the carriage at 12 55/.. to Countess Blucher – Ordered the French hairdresser
to come at 4 p.m. on Wednesday next to dress my hair for the birth night – Then
at the dressmakers, Mrs. Müller’s, and at Madame Ricard’s Monde des Modes –
Left
cards for Madame de Billé jeune, and Madame Scholten – and left card at 1st for
the Queen’s Maid of Honour at the Palais Jaune, the only one omitted yesterday
–
Set
down Countess B- and went to Lady Harriet at 3 – Brought her home with me, and
sent her back in the carriage and she staid till 4 3/4 –
Dinner
at 5 20/.. and sat over it (had a little nap) till 7 –
M.
and Mme. Fallesen called about 8 1/4 and sat 1/2 hour with me. Very nice people – Did not mean to receive
anybody, but the porter sent up to know if I was at home and so admitted them –
not liking to seem to be in the house and refuse them – With this interruption
all the evening till 11 1/2 at my accounts –
Fine
day after between 11 and 12 – F 58 1/2° now at 11 55/.. p.m.
