Very
fine morning. F 60 1/2° at 7 1/4 and 61° at 8 1/4 a.m.
At
German till 9 1/2 – then read the Hamburg Reporter and breakfast till 10 35/..
–
Sir William Rae the new M.P. for Bute in
the place of Captain Charles Stuart, nephew of Lord S. de R- [Stuart de
Rothesay] – Lady Rae (Sir W.R-’s William Rae wife) has £660 per annum from government
on account of her husband’s giving up something (the deputy Lord Advocacy?) of
Scotland –
The Emperor of Austria to be again Emperor of Germany and Protector
of Italy and these 2 titles to be forever alternate in the royal houses of Austria
and Prussia – but Austria now to have the 1st turn – the diet to be given up
and the Imperial council instead of
it – Without knowing anything about all this, I said to Miss Ferrall in our
journey, the diet (a republic of or over monarchs) could never go on long
–
At
German – Monsieur Christiani from 11 40/.. to 1 20/.. 8th Lesson – Afterwards
wrote out translations done with him and turned the English he gave me into
German and had a little nap (the sun so hot) till 2 3/4 –
Out
at 3 – to Countess Blucher’s. Only
Miss F- [Ferrall] at home – took her out walk[ing] on the Long Line for 3/4 hour then
left her at home. Sat about 3/4 hour
with Lady Harriet and home at 5 1/2
–
Dinner
at 6 – Lord Kerry and Mr. Colville arrived here at 12 this morning from
Stockholm, and went immediately to Mr. Browne’s, from where they were to go on
board the steamer at 6 this evening – So
the de Hagemanns’ troubles about them are over –
Lady
Hariett advises against my going to court here – Said perhaps this might not be
the last winter I might be here She is as strongly as she can against my
going to court. Says the less I ask of
the Brownes the better. The fact is, she and Mr. de H are evidently not well
with, nor does like court either –
Dressed
– Had a remise, and at 8 off to Countess Blucher, having 1st written a little
note to Lady Harriet to say that the 2 gentlemen were arrived, dining at Mr. Browne’s and went from there – and that
I was going this evening to Countess Blucher to hear what she said about going
to the revue on Saturday –
Nobody but them except the Danish major . . . . ., who staid
perhaps 1/2 hour – To dine with Comtesse Blucher at 3 on Saturday, and go to
the revue and drink tea with her afterwards – Miss Ferrall very odd, in
tears the latter part of the evening, impossible to guess why and talked as she
used to do to me about indifference to life etc. She must be a little cracky? –
Home
at 10 1/4 – kind note from Lady Harriet to say she had had a note from
Mr. Colville to say sorry he could not have the pleasure of seeing her – Would
take anything for her to England but she had nothing ready – Asks me to dine on
Saturday after the revue – and asks to have my letters to Lady Stuart and Vere
tomorrow –
Sat
up writing 3 1/2 pages (latterly small and close) of large 1/2 sheet to Lady V-
[Vere] – Till one and a quarter
Very fine day – F 64° at 1 1/2 tonight.
