Very fine, sunny morning. F 57 1/2° at 9 a.m. –

Breakfast at 10 – at 10 1/4 to 11 1/4 (finished breakfast while M. Christiani spoke German to me), M. Christiani 15 Lesson –

Did a little German.  Read the Hamburg Reporter of the 28th instante mense, and then a little nap till 12 50/.. –

Out at 1 10/.. to Countess Blucher’s for near 3/4 hour – Then took Miss Ferrall and the youngest little girl to the Long Line, and kept the carriage waiting while we walked up and down for about an hour meeting almost all the royal family en voiture or on foot – Must stop for the King or queen, but merely bow to the rest –

Home about 3 – Did a little more German.  Dressed at the de Hagemanns’ to dinner at 5 – Coffee immediately after dinner – Tea at 9 – Not a soul came –

Talked over court (all couleur de rose) and Mrs. Stuart Courtenay –

Home at 10 1/4 – A little German till 11 –

Fine day – F 58° at 11 p.m. --

1837 March Thursday 16 7 3/4 12 3/4 A long pretty good one last night, she coming to me. Breakfast (with Ann) at 8 1/2, at which hour, Fahrenheit 35°.   Fine morning – cold – Sat in the little parlour reading the last Foreign Quarterly on steam navigation to India till after 10 – Ann had Mr. Horner before 9 – Out at 10 1/4 – Robert Mann +4 (the surly man he has had the last 2 days not come – very well.   I had told Robert not to have him about the house) – Mawson came to me about 11 (Robert   Mann and company began resetting the 2 rocks under the middle pool) at the rocks, to say what he would put the Whiskum road into decent repair for – 7/. per rood – 57 roods from the top to the Cottage – Walked with him to view the road – Ordered it to be done – And he will wall up the wall let down in John Bottomley’s field by getting Whiskum stone for 5/. per rood – about 3 roods – And will make a wall, finding stone and all on the low side of the road in John Bottomley’s meado

1835 September Thursday 17 7 20/.. 12 40/.. No motion these three days Ann at Cliff hill – Ready in 3/4 hour – Fine morning, sunny and F 57 1/2° at 8 10/.., at which hour, went out – At the Cascade bridge, in the farmyard, and about till 9 40/.. – Then got 1/2 my breakfast, then a little while with my father and Marian and went out for a few minutes for the tea get rather stronger, but staid out till 12 – At Adney bridge – Had Mr. Husband and Charles and James Howarth and Robert Schofield and his man Joseph Sharpe to get an oak down to make room for bridge - road – All pulled at it – unshaken – Knew Messers Harper and Gray would say taking the tree down spoilt the job – Sorry to take it, but thought the road required it – Would be too narrow without taking the tree down.   However, happening to turn to Charles Howarth and ask him, he thought he would let the tree stand if it was his – so, 1/2 of his mind already, I took off the men and, no harm being yet done to the

Saturday, September 26, 1835

1835 September Saturday 26 8 12 1/4 No kiss. Rain last night from between 11 and 12 to after one – Rainy morning, but not heavy rain till near 9, then fair and F 55° – Breakfast at 9 1/4 – Ann getting off her speech for the first stone laying and I writing out mine.   Put on my new pelisse and had my hair done – Marian was to have gone to the 1st stone laying, but got nervous and staid at home – Ann and I off at 10 3/4 in my own carriage with our 2 men behind, to Northgate hotel – Not quite ready for us – Began looking over the drawings of Northgate, and, by mistake, kept the people waiting and did not begin the ceremony till about 11 3/4, which lasted about 1/4 hour – Ann did her part very well – the coins of the king’s reign (William iv) i.e. a sovereign 1/2 ditto, 1/2 crown, shilling, and sixpence ( Could not get a 7/. piece; very scarce – Swanns, the bankers in York, had only seen two of William iv 7/. pieces) were put into a large mouthed green glass bottle a
