Very
fine morning. F 63° at 8 1/4 a.m. At my German.
Breakfast
at 9 50/.. in 25 minutes – Finished dressing –
M.
Christiani, 2nd Lesson, from 11 to 12 1/2 when Lady H- de H- [Harriet
de Hagemann] took me up in their carriage with Comtesse B- [Blucher] and
Miss Ferrall to see Fredericksborg, the large new palace opposite (almost)
my windows –
The
pictures not to be seen today – An hour (with several people then) in the
museum of old Scandinavian curiosities, spears, hatchets, rings, etc., found
in tumuli – Then an hour walking over the palace – A round room, very pretty,
pannelled in differently stained wood, and the top (quite flat) made to look domed
by being done in large flutings (like an escallop shell) –
Just
peeped into the large unfinished room – Will be like their great assembly
room in York only a balcony all along above the fine Corinthian columns – Handsome
chapel –
Then
peeped into the handsome de cours de première instance (from which no appeal)
and where the king presides in state the 1st Thursday in every March – Not used
as yet – the president of the court begs to go on longer in the present place –
The
old palace of Fredericksborg burnt down 7 years ago – The workmen had left some
chips at the top of the palace and something or other that inflamed them –
Then
to the round tower Observatory – Could not be seen without an
order, for people went up and committed suicide by throwing themselves down – A
woman did it only a few days ago –
Then
begged the ladies to drive home and walked with M. de Hagemann thro’ the
Exchange on to the island of Amage to the East India dock, then to the
government dock – the East India company has but 2 ships – Only send one
every other year –
Home
at 4 10/.. – Then wrote out the German of this morning – Dinner at 5 55/.. in
3/4 hour –
At
my German again till 7 40/..
I put on a
different handkerchief but kept on my morning gown and pelerine
Off
to Comtesse Blucher’s at 8 – M. de Quahlen (of Altona) there, then came
young Madame de Bille, and afterwards her husband, son of the Madame de Bille
who was at the De Hagemanns’ on Tuesday, and then came the de Hagemanns – Tea
at 9 – Then sweetmeats and wine and water at 10 or after – Agreeable evening –
Home
at 11 1/2 – At my German till 12 1/2 –
Very
fine day. F 63 1/2° now at 12 40/..tonight –
Took Eugénie
just to put my large comb and arrange my hair in the anteroom. The people talk excessively about the
theatres of Paris and the one here.
In fact, I must learn these nothings before I can have much company
conversation --
