12 25/..

Very fine morning, F 56 1/2° at 8 1/4.

Out at 8 3/4 – bought waxlights – Strolled along the port and exchange into the island of Amager and about there –

Home in an hour – Had Peterson’s man – Asked 16 dollars for a carriage for 2 days to Roskilde, and a mile farther to chez Madame Rosenkrantz and back – Then would take 12 dollars – 120 dollars per month for a remise – Said that was ridicule – Should speak to M. de Hagemann about it –

Breakfast at 10 – had M. Christiani, 12th Lesson at 11 25/.. – Just read over my translation and at 11 50/.. out with him to Hollis about a carriage – A very nice new calêche with a pair of horses that I would engage for the 2 days at 4 dollars a day all expense of barriers etc. included, except that I would pay the coachman a dollar a day drinkgeld – A very neat calêche that I could have for 3 1/2 dollars a day all expense of barriers etc. included, I to pay the coachman a dollar a day as before –

Then left M. Christiani and went to Countess Blucher – There at 1 – There 3/4 hour – Then the Comtesse and I walked along the Long Line to the 1st Limekiln and back in 1 1/2 hour –

Then to Lady Harriet till 4 40/.. – Wrote from there to Comtesse Blucher to ask her to give up on plan of going to the play tonight.  All meet at Lady Harriet’s at 8 – Answer back yes!

Told Lady Harriet all about the carriage to Roskilde – and what Mr. Brown said yesterday about Mrs. Stuart Courtenay – She does not get into debt – and he will present her at court –

Countess Blucher and I talked of the de Hs,  how foolish they are about the court and how he gives himself airs and is therefore not liked and she made unhappy –

Home at 5 – dinner at 5 3/4

Madame de Bille announced by the waiter just before I had done dinner – qu’elle entre; said I, apparently to the man’s surprise – She came up and sat about 1/4 hour with me till 6 3/4, seeming better pleased to have been admitted than she would have been to be refused – It was evident? she thought me conversant with the usages du monde, and we seemed mutually well pleased with each other – I felt no embarrassment and am certainly improved and improving? Oh that I could learn to receive and representer well.  My winter here will do me good? and if Maria Cholmley sees me again, she may wonder still more to see me perhaps superior in manner as well as sense. Let π [Mariana] take Willoughby Crewe.  She will not get half of me again in a hurry –

Dressed – at the de H-s’ in 10 minutes at 8 20/.. – Found Madame Bille and her granddaughter there – Soon came Comtesse Blucher and Miss Ferrall – Then on the 2 former going away, came Monsieur and Madame Falsen (1st time of seeing them) and afterwards Monsieur Sarmento, the Portugueze minister – Agreeable evening –

Monsieur S- asked Lord Kerry and Mr. Colville about taking my carriage to Norway – Yes! It could go very well on the roads there – Monsieur S- advised my taking it –

Had ordered my carriage at 10 1/4 – Home at 10 3/4 –

Very fine day – F 59° now at 11 1/4 p.m. –
