1833

February

Wednesday 6 (Cont’d.)

and parted at 2 – In my walk in 20 minutes – John in the Lower brook Ing near the hut, holing for 3 more thorns – Home at 3 3/4 – Some time musing in the library –

Then preparing napkin and washing till four and thirty five minutes.

Found very kind letter (3 pages and ends) on my desk from Vere, Rome, 20th ultimo.

Like to leave there next month and be in England in May for her confinement in June – then lastly doubting? May meet me in Paris in April –

Suppose I heard how she was some time ago – Annoyed at her friends being so communicative without her leave – ‘You, who if you did not know me better, at least consulted my wishes more than they, have taken no notice, for which I am grateful, and owe you the confidence in return. I have suffered for many weeks as people do of a morning but I am now quite well’....

‘So you have trusted again to the same hand for setting your new establishment on foot? I hope it will answer better than the last!’

Your last sentence strikes me – ‘Burgess’s Antiquities of Rome in 2 large octavo volumes, very clever very learned and expensive.  He is the English clergyman here, and has young men to educate – He crys up Forsyth before all Books of that kind – Promenades dans Rome by Stendhal, very amusing and improper sous tous les rapports. Défendu in Rome, but I have seen it – Better get it, and hide it’ –

Mrs. and the Miss Camerons are in Edinburgh and will be till March –

From 4 40/.. to 5 35/.., read from page 69 to 89 Lyell ii., then with my aunt and afterwards in the little room till dinner at 6 1/2 – Afterwards read from p. 90 to 147, Lyell’s Geology, Volume 2 – Had a little nap and wrote the last 4 lines of yesterday and above of today till 9 3/4 –

Parcel from Whitley’s, De la Beche’s Geological Sections, Lindley’s Introduction to the Natural System of Botany, and Sir Humphry Davy’s Consolations in Travel – Looking over the plates and reading the Introduction of the 1st, and 18 pages, Introduction, of the 2nd and the first Dialogue or first 56 pages of the 3rd, till 11 3/4 – No time to read the Courier –

Went to my room at 12 – Very fine, mild day – F 51° now at 12 – Rather rainy and windy now at 12 3/4 –
