Christmas
day – No kiss.
Ready
in 50 minutes – Fine morning – Hard frost – F 35° at 10 10/.., at which hour
breakfast –
Sat
downstairs reading in the last Quarterly Review the few first pages of
the article favorable on Miss Roberts’ India – The City of Palaces (Calcutta). 800,000 inhabitants had grown up entirely
under the English within the last 80 years –
Then
had George in the North parlour – Longish talk –
Then in 23 minutes at 12, read the prayers and lesson and collect, epistle, and gospel and part of the morning service in my aunt’s room to her (in bed) and Oddy and Mary and John and George –
Went out at 12 55/.. No! Mr. Jubb came to see my aunt. All the rest well or nearly so – Mr. Jubb thinks my aunt not so well today as yesterday and getting weaker – I said I thought she could not continue long, and he seemed almost agreed – Is to come tomorrow –
Sat
talking to Ann – Out at 2 1/2 to 5 1/4 – At the Lower fish pond, the Lodge, in
the walk, farm yard and about – Musing over the Rockwork and making up
my mind how to do it –
Dressed
– Dinner at 6 1/4 – Coffee – 1/2 hour with my father and Marian – Then 1 1/2
hour till 9 3/4 with my aunt – Better tonight – Talked cheerfully of how pleased
my father would be to see her if she could be got into the drawing room on New
Year’s day – Then sat talking to Ann till 10 1/2 –
Fine
day – Hard frost, F 30° now at 10 35/.. p.m.
