January

Monday 11

8 55/..

11 50/..

No kiss.

Ready in 40 minutes – Then dressed Ann’s back – The blister place better – Put a little honey on the bad place last night, and it did good –

Fine morning, hard frost – F 30° at 9 40/.. at which hour, went down to Holt, who had brought William Dean to speak to Ann about upper Hagstocks farm – To have it at £25 per annum i.e. a few shillings above the old rent – and on year-to-year renewing lease – Much wants laying out in fencing and repairs –

Holt says 60 yards piping wanted for the pheying at Walker Pit – brought down a few coals this morning from a bit of a post left in their way – Machans now want to sell the farm and coal together – Mr. Rawson’s foreman about it – Holt to see them again on Friday and let me know the result –

Breakfast at 10 in 1/2 hour – Then wrote the above of this morning –

Sealed and directed my notes written last night, and gave the one for Jane to Marian, to give her for ‘Dr. Belcombe York’ merely ‘Miss Lister recommends to Dr. Belcombe the bearer, Jane Thirsk, Shibden Hall, Monday 11 January, 1836 –

Then gave George (at 11 1/2) my longer note to ‘Dr. Belcombe, York’ beginning with My Dear Stevens and  dated this morning and my note to ‘Mrs. Duffin, Micklegate, York’ of inquiry after herself and Mr. Duffin, and if she could not write by George, to let me hear from her by and by – Had had no time to look for papers respecting Eliza Raine, but would look by and by – Out in the farmyard from 11 3/4 to 12 10/..

A few minutes with Ann – Poorly.

Then looking over journal till 12 3/4, at which hour went out again – No! Marian returned – could not get Jane off – Annoyed at the coach office bookkeeper, who had let Mr. Edward Alexander have the place Jane ought to have had – But a coach going to York in the afternoon – Advised Marian to try this –

She kept me talking till Robert Mann came for me at 1 10/.. – With him from then to 5 5/.. (except 1/4 hour till 4 5/.. that I came in to the brother of Mr. George Bates, who brought the Estimate of the water wheel; that and the pumps altogether about £450, so that adding the expense of ashlar and labor for wheel-race, the whole expense of the wheel will be not much less than £550?)  Robert Mann and Wood and Samuel Booth (John Green did not come today) in the farmyard this morning setting curb-stones in the dunghill-stead forming 4 compartments of paving as shewn in the foregoing diagram –

In the afternoon had the men filling up Adney bridge from cuts made into the high bank towards the Southwest –

Staid out while it was dark – Went to the Lodge and the Lower fish pond and walked 1/4 hour or 20 minutes on the terrace to warm my feet before coming in at 5 55/.. – My aunt just being brought down into the drawing room, the 1st time since her illness and lying in bed till 4 or 5 p.m. – A few minutes with her – Dressed – Dinner at 6 20/.. – Coffee – Ann and I 1/2 hour with my father and Marian, and I remained after Ann till 8 50/.. –

Then wrote the last 14 lines till 9 10/.. – Then at the few closing beautiful lines of liber 8 of the Iliad (wrote out the Greek) and then 25 minutes with my aunt (in her own room) till 10 10/.., at which hour, F 27° and fine but dark night –

Very fine day – Hard frost – Very cold –
