December

Sunday 20

9 1/2

11 5/..

No kiss.  Up at five and a half with a bowel complaint, and twice again before and on getting up.

Ready in 40 minutes – Winterly morning, F 30° at 10 1/4 and driving small snow falling –Breakfast at 10 1/4 in 3/4 –

My aunt rather better, and all the other invalids going on well except Sharpe the Cook – She very poorly –

Bad bowel complaint, so sat downstairs till near 12 reading the last Quarterly – Then in the blue room reading the same –

Mr. Jubb came about 1 – Thought my aunt better; all the rest would soon be well – Sharpe would be some time before she recovered – Told Mr. Jubb of my bowel complaint and that I had been taking a little (1/2 oz. ounce glass) port wine – On seeing my white yellow tongue, he said I wanted a dose of calomel, but I might try the port wine till tomorrow – At Ann’s luncheon, took 1/2 a glass more port and a biscuit –

Before and afterwards, sat reading at intervals all the day – Finished the article on Heine’s Germany – That on the poor of Europe, of America, and the great misery of the Irish poor, and that on Flamstead, the 1st astronomer royal – His character vindicated justly at the expense of that of Newton, Halley, and Dr. Arbuthnot –

Till 5 20/.. wrote the above of today –

Then wrote and sent by George this evening, letter dated Saturday 19th instante mense to ‘Messers Bates and Son, Millwrights, Washer Lane near Halifax’ and to  Mr. George Bates, Millwright, Sowerby Bridge near Halifax’ and to ‘Mr. Matthew Ingham, Millwright, Thornton New Road, Bradford’ saying Mr. Harper would be at the White Swan Inn, Mr. Carr’s House, on Monday the 28th instante mense and would receive estimates for a water wheel I proposed erecting – 30 feet diameter with 5 foot breast – The water to be thrown on to the wheel 2 feet below the top of the wheel –

‘The wheel to be constructed in the best and most substantial manner and according to the most approved plan – A specification of the construction of the wheel must be enclosed with a sketch of it, including going gear to work two 6 inch pumps, and any remarks requisite respecting the wheel race required and the preparation necessary for receiving and fixing the wheel – The water being chalybeate, iron is to be used as sparingly as possible’ –

Dinner at 6 20/.. Coffee – 1/2 hour with my father then an hour with my aunt till 9 – She had been up since 4 this afternoon, and seems considerably better tonight – But I did not talk much – Yet she could talk of going back to France – If she did go, she would put on the cloth cloak she wore before to cross the water in –

Cold but fair day after about 10 a.m.  F 32° now at 9 p.m., a sprinkling of snow on the ground ever since morning.
