December

Sunday 27

8 3/4

11 1/4

No kiss.

Ready in 50 minutes.  Fine, but rather hazy, morning.  F 36° now at 8 35/.., at which hour Ann off (walked) to the school –

Sat downstairs reading the Last Quarterly Review, Miss Roberts on Hindoostan  and article on astronomy and had George in till 10 –

Then off to Mytholm expecting Mr. Husband there – Aquilla Green sent his man to Pump for him – Gone off to Dewsbury before it was light this morning – Of course, he had not got my message by Frank –

Talked a little while to Aquilla Green.  He says they build mills at Bradford, a more flourishing town than Halifax, for 7 1/2 or 8 per cent on the money laid out – And he thought I would do it – No! Never, said I, nor Miss Walker either, nor would Mr. Washington advise her to do so –

Then met Ann near Hipperholme Lane Ends – Walked back with her and came in at 11 1/4 –Wrote the above of today –

Ann poorlyish or some way out of sorts

At 12 10/.., read prayers to my aunt (she in bed) and Oddy and Mary and John the footman, in 25 minutes – Mr. Jubb came at 12 3/4 – My aunt sent word she was too poorly to see him – 10 minutes conversation with him – He seemed to agree with me, my aunt might slip away at any moment – So determined not to go to church this afternoon –

Sent the horses back and sent off George with note from Ann to her aunt and another to tell Mr. Washington to call here tomorrow morning in his way to Honley –

Ann would have gone to church without me, but I thought it better not.  She is crying about something, the insurance for Honley Mill, and lowness, all out of sorts but I have put her on the sofa before the fire and perhaps she will fall asleep.  What a person to expect comfort and companionableness from?

At 2 1/4, had written the last 10 lines and sat down to accounts – Marian came upstairs and staid some time talking to Ann and me about my aunt etc. etc.

Then at accounts (George’s) again till 3 50/.., when I could just see to write the last line or two on the window seat in my study –

Just went in to my aunt – Not up – Then some time with my father and Marian till near 5 –

Then with Ann come right again.  She had not been satisfied at what I said about Honley Mill. Now I have pleased her better and she is right again.  What an odd temper! I shall learn how to manage her by and by –

Dinner at 6 1/4 – Coffee – 1/2 hour with my father and Marian – Then a little while, as I had been before dinner, copying out Mr. Freeman’s upper Place quarry account, then with my father and Marian.  To my aunt at 8 1/2 – they staid 10 minutes and I till 9 3/4 p.m., at which hour, F 37° and fine mild but dark night –
