December
1
5/.. then wrote note for her compliments to Mr. Musgrave and ask him to fix any
day for coming to give her the sacrament as usual before Christmas – all join
in compliments to and kind inquiries after Mrs. Musgrave –
Then
wrote note to Whitley to order Vox Stellarum or Moore’s Almanack improved for
my aunt – and the Almanach de Gotha and Court Calendar for 1836 for myself, and
to be on the lookout for Beckmann and get the work for me (3 volumes octavo) as
soon as he can –
Sent
off George to Pyenest with inquiries after the family from Ann and ourselves
and sent by him my note § to ‘the Reverend Charles Musgrave, Vicarage’ –
and my note to ‘Messers Whitley and Booth, Booksellers,Halifax –
Out
again at 1 3/4 at the tail goit near an hour and Lower fish pond till called in
to Mr. Jubb about 3 – My aunt very poorly, the fluttering not relieved
by the plentiful operation yesterday of the medicine – She cannot bear to speak
– Mr. Jubb seems to agree with me that she is very poorly – Not likely
to rally much or perhaps continue very long –
John
the footman better – May be well in 2 or 3 days – Without the emetic and medicine
yesterday, would have been ill in the fever – Sarah the kitchen maid went ill
to bed this morning – Beginning in the fever – Is to have an emetic and 8
leeches and medicine as soon as possible – To be ready in an hour, and I sent
off Frank in 1/2 hour to Mr. Jubb’s –
In
and out till 4 1/2 p.m. – Then dressed –
Wrote
letter to Messers Henry Bates and son about water wheel according
to Mr. Harper’s programme of the estimate required, but find he had said
nothing about pumps, so will wait to hear what Holt and Washington say tomorrow
morning.
Ann
wrote to Mr. West, the schoolmaster, to say Miss Walker is sorry and surprised
to find the terms stated in her letter of the 9th instante mense so little
satisfactory to him – and it not being her intention to offer him any other
terms, she concludes her negotiation with him is at an end –
Had
just written so far of today at 5 3/4 p.m. – Went with Ann for a minute or 2 to
my aunt but she could not bear to speak to us – Sat talking till dinner at 6
40/.. – 10 minutes with my aunt till 7 55/.. – Then coffee – Then with my father
and Marian, Ann and I, near 1/2 hour, and then I with Marian talking about
the invalids in the house and about the railroad by Northgate – It seems Mr.
Jubb told Marian she ought not to leave home even for a day or 2, my aunt so
poorly –
Skimmed
over tonight’s paper upstairs – then sat 25 minutes with my aunt till 10 1/4 –
Never saw her so poorly – She could not bear to speak at all, and several times
put her hands upon her chest as if she had great pain there – On asking her,
she just said it was a fluttering up and down – She does not shew any sign of
thinking herself in danger, but surely she cannot continue long if not better –
Fine
soft day – Fahrenheit 40 1/2° now at 10 20/.. p.m. –
Kind
Letter tonight (a 1/2 sheet full) from Lady Stuart de Rothesay franked by Lord
Stuart de Rothesay from Highcliffe – Lady Stuart safe back at Whitehall – Ward,
her butler, will probably leave her; wants to take advantage – to have board
wages and eat at home with his wife – Lady S. de R- Stuart de Rothesay says I
may have an opportunity of engaging him – No! No! Not under such circumstances
--
§
