Hazy
morning, F 64° at 7 1/2 a.m.
Had
Parsons junior to cut Ann’s hair and my own –
Breakfast
at 9 –
Had
Mr. Harper between
10 and 11 for a few minutes – The 1st stone of the Casino to be laid on Saturday
next, and Mr. Harper to be at Halifax if he could on Friday afternoon or evening
–
Soon
afterwards had Mr. S. Gray for 5 minutes. To be at Shibden at the end of the week or be
ready to begin his work of laying out the new approach road etc. on Monday –
Mr.
Gray (Jonathan) came at 10 and staid till 2 – He 1st wrote me a short
will, 5 or 6 lines, for my aunt, making me sole executor and leaving me to do
as I liked about everything – Asked what I was indebted to him – 5/. – Gave him
1/2 a Sovereign, saying I really could not think of giving him less –
Ann
then had him busy about her affairs till 2 – She had left the room at 1st while
he was writing my aunt’s will – He took
that opportunity of telling me Captain had told him he was not grasping he had given
Ann fourteen hundred pounds to satisfy. I said it was an ungentlemanly misrepresentation,
and explained how it was that Ann had made five propositions, of which he had
accepted the one to give up Bouldshawclough Farm and coal, to induce Ann to take
lot one – Advised Mr. Gray not to tell Ann
now; it would only annoy her. But told her myself afterwards.
Mr. Gray wrote form of inscription to be put with the coins in the 1st stone of the Casino and he also wrote a speech for Ann to make to Mr. Kelson, the master builder. Wrote and sent note to ‘Mr. Harper, Judges Lodgings’ enclosing Mr. Gray’s form of inscription for the 1st stone laying, and begging to have it copied exactly on the plate or lead as it was quite what I approved –
Ann
and I had luncheon (cold beef fried, or heated up) at 2 55/..in 10 minutes – then
went out to do the little shopping Ann had to do – Met the 2 Misses
Bagshaw –
Finding
it earlier than we thought, desired the postboy to drive to Dr. Belcombe’s –
10 minutes there, saying my visit was
chiefly to see little Percy çi devant little Mariana – Looking much better than
I expected, tho’ a yellow-pale – Very low in stature, with broad plain
face, and altogether not at all interesting looking – A plain likeness of father
and mother – Very uninsinuating in manner – I had had no thought of her till Ann
reminded me –
Then
stopt at Cattle and Barber’s en passant and at Woodall’s and paid for my waterproof
riding cloak and alighted for a minute at Mr. Duffin’s – Just saw him – she over
the bridge so did not see her –
Off
from Mr. Duffin’s door at 4 1/2 – Delayed 10 minutes in Leeds calling
at Yates’s for the lamp glass – returned by the Leeds and Whitehall road, and did
this stage in 2 10/.. hours –
Home
at 10 1/4 – Tea – Fine day till 3 1/4; afterwards, rainy afternoon and evening
till our leaving Leeds at 8 5/.. – F 63° in my dressing room at 12 5/.. tonight
– Rainy night --
