September

‘. . . . .you seem anxious for her to go abroad – Charles Norcliffe knows Nice – The journey is very long, if it cannot be shortened by steam – Whatever money you may want, even the whole sum, shall be ready’ –

Glad her friend in Paris benefitted by the Swiss journey – ‘Would that we could all look on the past with satisfaction, on the present with complacency, and to the future with hope!  Let us resolve to do so – Cheer up, Mary; for I feel assured that you have reason – whatever a steady and affectionate friendship can do for you, you can count upon.’ –

Mean to write to Mrs. Milne –

Have heard from Isabella Norcliffe – fear Mrs. Norcliffe’s life will not be very long spared –

Mariana very good about Martha Booth – Shall be glad of Mariana’s getting her an improving place – I the last in the world to be able to help her in this way – ‘Besides, my confidence in her is not now what I once hoped and assured myself it would have been’ –

Adney out – But thanks, and if Mariana will send us the title of her cutting out book it will be enough –

Anxious to hear from her soon –

‘God bless you, my dearest Mary!

Ever very affectionately and especially yours,

A.L-

Wrote the last 20 lines till 4 10/.. – Then out about – Musing in the new farmyard – Had Booth there and Cockroft and Robert Mann – Told Booth to get Robert Mann what stones he wanted for the Stump Cross Inn water drift in the course of tomorrow –

Then sauntered to the Lodge about 5 1/2 – Very heavy rain came on – Got back to the barn, and staid there a little while –

Came in at 6 – Dinner at 6 1/4 – Coffee – About 1/2 hour with my father and Marian till 8 35/.. –

Sent George tonight to Dobson’s for rag throughs for the farm yard wall, so he had not time to go to the post, therefore did not send my letter to Mariana and have had no newspaper –

Heavy rain at 10, but nearly fair at 11, and fair till about 12 – Afterwards more or less rainy all the afternoon till very heavy rain between 5 and 6, and wet evening –

Tea at 9 1/4 – 1/4 hour with my aunt till 10 10/..

Fahrenheit 64° now at 10 1/2 p.m.
