March

12 3/4
Twenty five minutes dozing on the pot. Fahrenheit 48 1/2° at 7 3/4 a.m.
Read from 116 to 138, volume
1, Flore de France – Got Annales des Sciences Naturelles for January – Breakfast
at 9 1/4 – Dawdled over it reading the Annales till 10 –
Off to Madame Galvani at 10
1/4 – She was not quite ready – Waited 10 minutes – Talked – Read aloud to her
from page 374 to 384, Volume 4, French translation of Hallam’s Middle Ages – She
gave me a letter for ‘Miss Paxton, Honorable Mrs. Leeson’s, Welwyn, Hertfordshire,
Angleterre,’ which I myself directed, promising to send it by the courier tomorrow
–
My aunt came for me at 1 – Left
Madame Galvani at 1 20/.. – Drove to 56 rue des Arcis, and gave back 1 of the pounds
of tea I got there yesterday, as MacDonald thought they had perhaps cheated me and
given me four franc tea !
Then drove to the bois de Boulogne
– My usual walk as far only as Auteuil in 1 10/..hour, then to the Jardin du
Roi – Rising the hill in the rue St. Victor, waggon shaft ran against us and
injured the off side of splash board and the body of the carriage a little – Well
it was no worse – Annoying to have such an accident in broad daylight and in such
a wide part of the street –
Very indifferent chair 24/.
la demi douzaine – Better answer in noyer and merisier 30/. small kitchen tables
at 10/.
Then left Message for M.
Audoin (with the maid servant) that I could not m’établis dans mon petit apartment
Samedi – He had promised to call on me then at 11 a.m. that day –
Then stopt to look at chairs
and tables, No. 25 Quai St. Michel, called en passant and sent George up to inquire
after Madame Droz (a little, but not much, better today) and home at 5 1/4 –
Dressed – Dinner at 6 – Read
the paper – Came to my room at 8 10/.. –
My aunt brought me this morning
to Madame Galvani’s, note from M. Julliart to say he cannot meet with a table
to suit me – Had seen chaises asser jolies at 2 francs et que l’on cederait at
30 sols –
Letter also from Mariana,
Leamington, 3 pages and the ends, rather widely and hurriedly written – In consequence of my letter she will take little
Mariana back with her to Lawton – ‘I have no intention whatever of taking upon
myself any responsibility beyond that of not letting the child lose time while
she is with me, if by and by Steph would send her to a good school, I should have
no objection to help him as far as £50 per annum for 2 or 3 years, having done
so much for Harriet Milne’s children, I think I ought to do a little for his –
more particularly as the only girl is my godchild’ . . . . . Seems to think of
keeping her with her a year if she can –
She never thinks of doing anything for me. Good, I will do without any of her money and
pay her in one way or other all I owe, and if I get well suited with a
travelling companion who has money enough and who can and will suit, I fear Mariana’s
chance is not worth much. I am not a good
one at waiting quietly for years to come.
Just Before and after dinner
till 8 1/2 wrote this journal of today – – Coffee at 9 25/.. – Came to my room
at 10 25/.., at which hour, Fahrenheit 53°.
Very fine warm day –
Before and after coffee (till
11 3/4) wrote 3 pages and one long end to Mariana.
