Sunday 4
7 5/..
12 25/..
Fahrenheit 55° at 8 a.m. Out
at 8 5/.. to the bois de Boulogne – My usual walk to the La Muette gate and then
walked very nearly to the barriere. Home
at 10 25/.. – Breakfast over at 11 5/.. – Dressed – Had 1/2 hour’s nap –
Prayers from 12 35/.. to 1 1/4 – Sat talking to my aunt –
Went out at 2 10/.. – Drove
(by Vincennes) to Pont de St. Maur, and alighted
on the bridge at 3 20/.. – Stood some
time on the bridge and at the foot of it – Then walked through the voûte du
canal (the tunnel) 600 meters long – 5 meters high to the centre of the vault,
channel 4 meters 75 centimeters deep, with chemin de halage (towing path) 2 meters
wide, opening into a handsome basin 120 meters by 30 meters, a lock from this
into a smaller basin from which a lock opening
into the river (Marne) – Very handsome piece of work – This short cut of
canal saves a detour of 2 lieues by the river, which navigation was difficult
and dangerous in winter – Rocks in this part of the river which were dangerous
–
Luckily met a respectable party
in the voûte – One of the females as good as a cicerone –
Mongolfier had a paper mill close
by, but he had lately sold it; and strangers are not now admitted –
Got into the carriage again
at 4 20/.. – The gates open on Sundays
only, so drove through the bois de Vincennes to Charenton – Stood a minute or 2
on the bridge there – The new bridge of Ivry (iron bridge but not suspension ) very pretty over the Seine – First
below the junction of the Marne and Seine – Very near to us – but had not time
to go to it – Must drive here some other day –
Home at 6 1/4 – Dressed –
Dinner at 6 40/.. Read the paper and
supplement – Came to my room at 8 40/.. –
On coming home, found the
card of ‘Le Comte Zamoyski, p.p.c’ –
Cold all today, and no sun
– A few drops of rain as we drove along
the boulevards home and rain enough to
have wet the streets soon after we came in –
Wrote all but the first 2
lines of today – Coffee at 9 25/.. – Came to my room at 10 1/2 – Settled
accounts – Reading till 11 3/4, Volume 1 Flore Française. In the course of today have read of this volume
from page 174 to 201.
Fahrenheit 40° at 11 3/4 p.m.
and rainy night –
