6 50/..

1 10/..

But lay on the bed for ten minutes at seven. Fahrenheit 50° 7 3/4 a.m. – Breakfast at 8 20/60 –

Madame Decante came soon after and staid till 9 1/2 – Talked of dresses – etc. etc.  To go on Monday to see some new dresses –

Spoke of Madame and Mademoiselle Dobray, friends of Mrs. Barlow’s, hotel de Douvres sur le boulevard, who had heard of her indirectly through Delisle the banker, rue Blanche No. 5 or 7?, who paid money on her signature given at Rome, where she appears to have passed the winter

Madame Mackenzie rue de Loudres No. 63 has scarcely finished furnishing her house, and is going to sell all up and go to England – Going to have a sale, or agree with her tapissier for the whole ‘en bloc’ –

Wrote the above of today –

Set off to Madame Galvani at a little after 10 –

Went to No. 5 rue Neuve de la Femme and saw the phaeton advertised in Galignani, lowest price 2000/. – Hardly worth 1/2 – Saw the servant – The tire as thin as a sixpence – Proud the thing had been at Dunkerque and a hundred miles in Germany – Probably all over Germany – Drab lining, rather shabbyish – Wheels very light – Too light for travelling –

Then sauntered along the Quais and got to Madame Galvani’s at 11 – Read about a page of Volume 1, Voltaire’s Letters – Talked all the rest of the time till 2, then came (walked) with Madame Galvani to the rue Castiglione gate of the Tuileries Gardens –

Asked en passant chez le dégraisseur rue Godot de Mauroy – Spoke to him about the boublure de la voiture – doublure en coutil – il faut la nettoyer à neuf – Price 8 or 9 francs to be done au milieu de la semaine prochaine –

Home at 2 3/4 –  Hair curled –

Found letter, 3 pages and the ends and under the seal, from Mariana, Leamington – Wants Charles to buy Augusta cottage at Leamington, price 7,000 £ instead of spending £3,000 in altering the house at Lawton – She is very right, but I have no hope Charles will agree –

Their journey to London put off – they will dispose of their britchka – Mariana wishes I had it – It will be a bargain to someone –

In spite of all her expenses has saved near £100 for her visit to me next year –

‘Have you made or thought of any plans for the summer; if we could choose our own time, what should you prefer, having me with you in Paris a month  or two in the winter (remembering that I cannot speak French) or in Summer or autumn to make a little tour? Answer me this’ –

Christian had been behaving ill to Mrs. Wilbraham’s maid ! and behaving oddly about raising his wages, and will probably not stay long with the Lawtons tho to have twenty five pounds and an equivalent for Master William’s old clothes, which Charles had promised but Mariana says she promised them to Grantham who has always had them

Mariana seems pretty well – the little while little Mariana was left at school costs 28.18.6–

Wrote the above of this page and the last 4 lines of the last page and had just done at 3 50/.. –

Wrote 2 pages to Mariana –

Dressed – Dinner at 6 5/.. – Read the paper – Came to my room at 8 5/.., at which hour, loud peal of thunder and heavy shower –

Asleep till coffee at 9 1/2 – Talked of Mariana’s letter, the utter uncertainty whether we should get together or not.  Mention the proposed alteration at Lawton and the place at Leamington Mariana would rather buy – Mention about excursion – perhaps this autumn – to Rome and Naples – Could say nothing as yet – Then talk of my aunt’s going to Shibden – She owns she does not know what she should like – We must determine when our term in this apartment expires next 1 July 12month

Came to my room at 10 50/.., at which hour. Fahrenheit 57° – Very fine, sunny day –

Madame Galvani mentioned en passant the gardens this morning.  They were never known to be green on the 21st March as they were this year  – They are beautiful now –

Wrote the last 8 lines till 11 – From then to 12 50/.., wrote  page 3, and the long ends, and under the seal and finished my letter to Mariana, having had hair curled at 12
