March

Tuesday 9

7 20/..

12 5/..

Fahrenheit 42° at 7 1/2 a.m. and rainy morning –

At my desk at 8 1/4 – Copying out into my business letter book my last letter but one and my letter of yesterday to Mr. Briggs, and a long entry from my last letter to Marian –

Then breakfast at 10 1/4 in 1/2 hour – Then siding a little – Dressed at 11 3/4 in 20 minutes – Then reading different articles, Nysten’s Medical Dictionary and nodding over them till 1 1/2 –

Off at 1 3/4 – stopt 10 minutes to buy blank books etc. at the shop corner of rue Richepanse –

At the College de France at 2 1/4 – Waited 3/4 hour – Cuvier’s 22nd lecture from 3 to 4 1/4 – on the causes and good effects of the crusades – the establishment of universities – mendicant friars, etc. etc. – Very interesting lecture –

Saw M. Audoin on coming away – He had heard of a little apartment, No. 7, rue du Jardin des Plantes; au troisième (my aunt had driven about while I was at the lecture) took him up, and drove to look at it – 2 little rooms and a very little cuisine – at the rate of 180/. per annum; I take par trimestre – de 3 mois à 3 mois –

Then went to look at the new house, rue des Victors – apartments très mal distribués et très chers – 400/. for the troisième, a little bedroom and salon and salle à manger and kitchen – and 1200/. for the première like an entresol – but would have taken 1000/. for the same –

The other house opposite the rue de Seine will do well enough – Told M. Audoin to take it – to give the porter 3/. as a fastening penny – The brick floor to be mis en couleur at my expense – but there is a court there that the carriage can turn in – I shall have a few chairs and tables to get, and the fitting up will cost me something, but on the whole, perhaps I shall do very well –

Home at 5 20/.. – Dressed – Dinner at 6 – Came to my room at 7 40/.. – Making out rough draft of index from 1st of this month –

George seems to clip a little tonight – I shall at last take a resolution, and get rid of him –

Coffee at 9 25/.. – Sat talking to my aunt about my little apartment, rue du Jardin du Roi – whether to have Cameron with me there or not, etc. etc., and did not come to my room till 11, at which hour, Fahrenheit 47°

Rainyish sort of day – Gentle rain, but a heavier shower every now and then – Reading the introduction and 2 first pages volume 1, l’Europe au Moyen Age, par Hallam, till 11 1/2–
