February
Monday 20
6 55/..
11 55/..
No kiss
Fine morning but cold and
windy; F33° at 7 55/.. a.m.
Then out 10 minutes with
Robert Mann + 2 at the lowest pool –
Then breakfast at 8 10/.. to
9 –
Then out with Robert Mann and
company till 12, then settling with Bligh how to do the hall above the
wainscotting – till 12 1/2 –
Then read 1/2 hour Lindley’s
Botany, then out again with Robert Mann till about 4 1/2 p.m., when Mr. Cole
came, brought and left with me his plan of a 4 to 5 horsepower high-pressure engine
– He would do complete the whole of his engine job (in going order) for from £200
to £300 – Said I should determine nothing till Mr. Harper came about the middle
of next month, but observed that neither Mr. Harper nor Holt nor I myself liked
a high-pressure engine –
Ordered in cold meat and wine,
and left Mr. Cole, and sent for Joseph Mann, who came in about 1/4 hour or less
–
Returned to Mr. Cole with
Joseph Mann, who satisfied Cole that filling the carts from an inclined plane
or scree would not do here – The people would rather fill their carts by
shovelling – 6 feet of rise of platform above the Godley road – enough –
Inclined plane to be driven 5 feet wide – Breast of platform to the road 24
yards X 25 yards – Left Mr. Cole again about 5 1/2 to drink his wine and make
the best of his way by the Lodge to meet the Bradford coach about 6 –
Rain about 5 for 1/2 hour,
then fair again. With Robert and company
at the Lowest pool – sodding up thereabouts till came in at 6 10/.. – A leak
discovered this evening in the upper pool – Terrible – When shall we get all
properly watertight?
Dressed – Dinner at 6 40/.. –
Coffee – Sat reading Encyclopaedia of Geography till long after 10 – Then wrote
the above of today –
F40° at 10 1/2 p.m. Cold, windy, disagreeable day, but fair till
after 5, when about 1/2 hour rain –
WYAS Finding Number SH:7/ML/E/20/0025
