No kiss. Very
bad cold – Could scarce speak – Breakfasted in bed about 8 3/4 – Ann off on her
pony about 11 to the school and Cliff hill, and, hearing Jenny Filton was very
ill, rode to Checkheaton to see her and did not get back till 5 –
Ann was to have been back at
12 1/2, and wanted me to lie in bed till her return – Tired of bed – up at 12
40/.. and ready in 50 minutes and out at 1 35/.., at which hour Fahrenheit 45°
and fine day.
With Robert Mann +2 (Sam and
Jack) – Robert and Sam throwing soil clay and rubbish from where the new coachhouse
courtyard is to be over the road and Frank carting it, and Jack filling for him,
and then took Robert +2 to planting hollies (those got up on Wednesday) close
upon the rock-bridge east embankment overhanging the pool –
With Robert till Ann returned
at 5 and would make me go in – Then with Bligh planning entrance into my uncle’s
room at the end next the north chamber –
Dressed – Dinner at 6 1/2 – Coffee
– Sat with Ann reading to myself Scenes of Commerce (a sort of School-book
of Ann’s, till 9 –
Very fine day, Fahrenheit 30°
at 9 1/4 p.m. and fine night –
Then sat reading the Halifax
Guardian of this morning and the London paper of tonight till 10 1/2
