No kiss. Ready
in an hour –
Got bills ready for John
Booth to pay and wrote note to Mr. Mackeon, Yorkshire District Bank, Halifax
to pay the lease (enclosing check No. 90 (£50 for myself ). It was 9 before
I had dispatched John – Then breakfast –
Mr. Husband brought Mr. George
Hainsworth’s bill for carting timber (7 tons) and take to Hill top new house –
Sent Cookson to tell Mr. Husband to put his name to my bill, saying I was at breakfast
–
Soon after that (at 10) came Mr. James Ingham, pro Mr. George Hainsworth, to whom I paid the bill 28/. for carting and gave check No.91 = £43.20 for the timber –
Then at my desk in the north parlour – Mr. Samuel Washington came to Ann at 10 1/2 – Then till 12 1/4 at accounts – Colliery account etc. –
Holt and the engineer
(Wood from Mr. George Bates) and Joseph Mann
came at 12 1/4 – Sent them down to the wheel-race and followed them in 1/4 hour
– No! went to Ann (at her luncheon) for 3/4 hour till 1 1/4, when Holt and the
engineer came back –
Had Holt by himself. Desired him to settle the matter of the
coal-trespass with Hinscliffe – The Engineer had set out and sufficiently
explained how the drift-mouth opening upon the wheel-race was to be done – 8 feet
wide and 18 feet? long thrown open – 5 feet wide of waterway and 18 inches on
each side left for puddling –
Saw the Engineer for a few
minutes or moments – He seemed lost about the meer-drift head clow – the clow
from the meer into the drift – So wished him good morning and went out at 1 3/4
–
Down to the meer. Robert +4 there all day laying the large rag stone for the by-wash and clow-[sur] – Walked round the meer musing how it should be planted round the head – Then from about 2 3/4, pruning five young oaks in the Dolt wood till 6 – Then came in and had the 2 Manns, and settling with them till 7 35/.., then dressed –
Dinner at 7 50/.. – Coffee –
Looked into last night’s and tonight’s paper – Letter 1 3/4 pages from Miss
Norcliffe, Petergate, York announcing the death of her sister Mrs. Best.
Had John Booth – Settled with
him after paying bills – Then downstairs at accounts and wrote the last 12 lines till 11 25/.. p.m., at which hour Fahrenheit
