Ann not in bed till 2 1/2 or later last night and off to the school about 8 1/2 this morning in the market cart –

Much rain in the night – Raining at midnight –

Rainy morning and 34 1/2° at 9 1/4 and sat reading Lindley’s Introduction to the Natural System of Botany – till about 11, when John Booth sent me in a letter, 2 pages, from his son, Joseph, begging pity and forgiveness and my thinking no more of the manner in which he had left here, saying Mallinson the joiner obliged to turn him off or he could not get joiners and would lose his job at Northgate Arms, and asking me to get him a good place under a good butler as soon as possible !

Sent for John – Told him to say I had already forgiven and thought no more of Joseph or his going away – Not in my power to get him a place, but if he referred to me I would give him the best character I could – I could say nothing about Mallinson – He (Joseph) of age, and must settle this matter himself –

Had John long above 1/2 hour – Then came upstairs, and reading again as before till near 2 –

Rainy windy boisterous day – Took Oddy inside – Took up Ann at the school, and at church at 2 1/2 – Mr. Wilkinson did all the duty – Preached ten minutes from Psalm ix.10 –

Too rainy and stormy to call at Cliff hill – Home at 4 25/.. From 4 1/2 then to 5 3/4 reading (Botany of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, etc.) Murray’s Encyclopaedia of Geography –

Wrote to Mr. Harper wishing him to send me Booth’s account and bills as soon as looked over, to be enclosed within a parcel of tea and coffee from Messers Heron and Dale, to whom wrote note on my 2nd page ordering the same, Mr. Harper to send my note to Messers Heron and Dale, whom I begged to inquire of Cattel and Barber if they had not a small parcel to send to Ann – She wrote a few lines to Mr. Harper in my letter asking him to send her note written in my letter to Prec[?]s and Mawson who are to make and send to Mr. Harper by the 10th proximo mense a pair of strong shoes for him to bring about the middle of the month –

Sent off my letter to ‘John Harper, Esquire, St. Leonard’s Place, York,’ containing note to Messers Heron and Dale’ –

Dinner at 6 3/4 – Coffee – Ann and I sat reading till about 10, then ordered dinner for tomorrow, and I till 10 25/.. Encyclopaedia of Geography, then till 10 40/.., wrote the last 10 lines –

Very rainy, stormy, windy day F38° to 40° now at 10 40/.. p.m., a couple of degrees of mercury divided from the rest standing at 40° the height of the rest 36° – therefore I have taken the supposed height at 38° ? – Fair and moonlight though thick and hazy –

Stood reading in my study till 11 20/.. –
