March

Sunday 12

8 1/2

10 50/..

No kiss. Very little washing, merely white cousin last night.

Ann up about 6 and off to the school about 8 3/4 –Fine morning; Fahrenheit 35°, and breakfast at 9 40/.. in 40 minutes – having cut my nails.

From 10 20/.. to 12 5/.. read (in the breakfast room ) the very interesting article in the last Quarterly Review from page 29 to 60 on Hallam’s much praised work, Introduction to the Literature of Europe –

Then till 1 20/.., wrote to ‘Mrs. Warburton, Hipperholme’ on a 1/2 sheet envelope enclosing 3 tickets. ‘Three museum-tickets with Mrs. Lister’s compliments to Mr. and Mrs. Warburton and Mr. Wilmott – Admission from tomorrow the 13th, to the 18th instante mense inclusive. Shibden hall – Sunday evening, 12 March 1837’ – To go by little John Booth on his way to Lightcliffe to Ann’s school tomorrow morning – and wrote to ‘Mrs. James Briggs’ on a 1/2 sheet, enclosing 2 tickets. ‘Mrs. Lister has great pleasure in enclosing two museum-tickets for Mrs. and Miss Briggs – Admission from tomorrow the 13th to the 18th instante mense inclusive. Shibden hall, Sunday evening, 12 March 1837’ to go by Frank this evening.

And wrote and dated tomorrow letter to Messers Gray, Solicitors, York – Beg to apologize for their 2 letters received about six weeks ago – My leaving home now certainly delayed till the 1st of May, that I shall be able to receive the money myself and settle everything before I go – Shall be much obliged for the earliest information when the money will be ready, and if not in York at the time, shall be glad of Mr. Watson’s coming here – Give the names of the tenants of Roydelands Marsh and Upper Place – Copied this and the note of the 3rd and letter of the 7th instante mense into my business letter book, and had written so far of today at 1 40/.. –

Off to the school for Ann and to church at 2 10/.. – Mr. Wilkinson did all the duty – preached 21 minutes from Matthew xx. 16 –

Left Ann at the school and drove to Cliff hill – Had sat an hour with Mrs. Ann Walker till 5 20/.. when Ann arrived and sat 10 minutes – Home at 5 50/.. – Ann brought back and read to me the selection of psalms ‘to be sung at Lightcliffe church’ that Mr. William Priestley had given the singers – A long rhodomontade preface ending with Τω θεω δοξα [theo doxa, Praise be to God] written as if the writer had copied the Greek characters without understanding it –

Dinner at 6 3/4 – Coffee – Read the newspaper – Looked into volume 1 Chateaubriand on the Literature of Great Britain – Disjointed and trifling –

Fine day; Fahrenheit 30° at 10 p.m.
