February

Tuesday 28

8 1/4

11 50/..

She came to me and good and short kiss last night.

Tolerably fine morning and Fahrenheit 37°, and breakfast at 9 1/4. Ann had Mr. Washington. whom she kept waiting 20 minutes till 9 50/.. and had her tenant Marsden, and rumpus (about his arrears of rent) between him and Samuel Washington – She then went to Halifax about 11 and returned at 12 1/2 for George to dine, and went to Cliff hill in the afternoon (rode both morning and afternoon) –

I sat reading till 12 40/.. Foreign Quarterly Review No. 36 of January last – good article on ‘the foreign policy and internal administration of Austria’ and 1 or 2 other articles – ‘no spot in Europe so remarkable for natural varieties, nor any so little travelled as the chain extending from Carniola through Croatia into Hungary’ – page 286

Natural steel found in Carinthia, page 286.  ‘The steel hanging bridge across the Danube canal at Vienna suspended from only two main chains, one at each side, is the only one of the kind in Europe,’ page 286

Railway from Vienna into Gallicia, page 293 and from Vienna to Trieste, page 294

1 Vienna joch = 101,508 hectares, page 277

Sat 1/2 hour with Ann.  Ate a biscuit or 2 and a little black currant jelly –

Out at 1 1/4 and from then to 6 40/.. out (except came in to get the wine out of the hall closet into the drawing room – Bligh pulled the closet ceiling down this afternoon and laid all open) –

Out with Robert Mann +2 (Samuel and Jack) siding old oak timbers (from Hill top Staups old barn Northgate, and a little from Hatters fold) out of Ingham’s way – Coming tomorrow to begin the new coachhouse court – to the East – up against the East end of the barn – The quondam cowhouse –

Dressed – Dinner at 6 55/.. – Coffee a little after 8 – From 9 to 10, played backgammon – Ann’s thought – We played 3 hits and she won them all –

Very kind letter tonight 3 pages and ends from Lady Harriet de Hagemann (Copenhagen) – Good account of herself and family – The King out of danger – Gave my letter to Miss Ferral – They had talked me over – Begs me to write and say when I am going and where – All about myself is interesting to Lady H. de H-.  Countess de Bourke very ill –

The parcel from Heron and Dale (tea and coffee) came just after – Containing packet – from Mr. Harper Letter and Booth’s account and bills – Ann put by the tea and coffee last night and gave me the packet which I opened this morning  Everybody so busy in York doing up for the Assizes, Mr. Harper cannot send me a plasterer before a fortnight hence – Asks particulars about the inclined plane many of fixed on the corves etc.

Wrote the above of today till 10 1/4, at which hour, Fahrenheit 31 1/2°.  Finish day, though a little hazy and some drizzling rain about 5 p.m. and damp the rest of the afternoon and evening –

Found Ann gone to bed – She had complained of being much tired while playing backgammon – Said she had hurried into bed – Could not bear to sit up any longer – Would take a glass of wine, which I gave her, and left her about 10 1/2 –

Then about 1/2 hour skimming over tonight’s paper – I fear poor Ann is beginning in the influenza – I have dreaded it for some time past –
