Ann better this morning – up
early – at least dressed and gone before I got up, and fine morning; Fahrenheit 36° now at 9 40/.. and breakfast to
10 1/2. Ann read her French (vocabulary
and read 2 pages) –
From 10 1/2 to 12, had Bligh
and Booth settling about my study fire-place and getting my things out into the
library passage –
At 12 went to Ann – sat about
3/4 hour with her –
Then had Bligh cutting the wainscotting in my study and arranging my things taken out of my study till 3, and then out with Robert Mann – Sam and Jack digging out the deep drain along the bottom of the quondam orchard. Had Robert setting out the ground at the back (north) and East end of farm yard – then levelling up soil brought from Northgate near the present entrance gates – Some time with Ingham and his son (a boy) who began this morning digging out the wall-race of the new coachhouse court (East end of the barn) –
With Edward the mason
breaking out the hole from my study
into the hall fireplace flue – the hall to take the hall chamber flue and my
study to take the present hall-flue – Edward this morning set the new stove Ann
ordered at Roper’s for the north parlour –
Went to the top of the west
tower – Putting on the floor of the top room, 4 inch large stones
dowelled into one another and fitted with cement to make all tight and
fire-proof – 3 or 4 men the whole of last week and so far of this preparing this
floor – Perhaps it will be all laid and done by tomorrow evening –
Came in at 6 10/.. Dressed –
Dinner at 6 35/.. – Coffee – Sat reading till 10 the Encyclopaedia of Geography
and tonight’s London newspaper – Then till 10 20/.., wrote the above of today –
Fine, cold day – Fahrenheit

Putting away newspapers and looking at map of Italy till 11 20/.. –
