Thinking of π [Mariana] –
Came upstairs at 11 – Made 2
or 3 entries in my book-journal etc. Read from page 657 to 708, end of Volume 5,
Les leçons de l’Histoire. I left off
here Thursday, 17 August 1820, and have read nothing of this volume since, till
today when I have skimmed over many of the most interesting parts of it, and
given all my time from 12 to 2 1/2 – I like this work very much – Mean to
resume it regularly, and give it a careful reading – I must think of some better
plan of reading in future; for I feel that I have hitherto wandered over too
many books with too little thought, and have always read too cursorily to do
1/2 the good that might be done –
In the afternoon from 3 3/4
to 5 53/60, walked with my aunt to Hipperholme lane-ends, thence along
Patchcliffe-wood lane to Samuel Sowden’s, thence across to South-holme, and returned
by Pinnel, Lower Place and Pump –
In the evening read from page
75 to 115, Addison on Medals –
Very fine day, though cold
and frosty – Barometer 1 1/2 degree above changeable. Fahrenheit 29° at 9 p.m. –
Came upstairs at 10 3/4 –
