July
Monday 23
8 3/4
1 1/2
We talked all last night, and only closed our eyes to
dose about half hour just before getting up.
Went to π [Mariana] but somehow did not manage a good kiss. Refused to promise till I had really felt
that she was my wife. Went to her a
second time. Succeeded better, and then
bound ourselves to each other by an irrevocable promise, forever in pledge of
which, turned on her finger the gold ring I gave her several years ago and also
her wedding ring which had not been moved off her finger ever since her
marriage. She seems devoted to me, and I
can and shall trust her now –
Vide page 82. Saturday 14
July – It has occurred to me can Charles
Lawton have given her a venereal affliction –
Left to ourselves perhaps an hour this morning,
mutually most affectionate. Said how
much happier I felt to have lost my liberty than I should to have kept it etc.
etc.
About 1 1/2 Mr. and Mrs.
Meeke (she Harriet’s sister) arrived for the christening from the Broomes near
Stone – At 2 we all went to the parish church, Harriet and I and the nurse and
child in Steph’s carriage and Mrs. Meeke and Mariana in the Meekes’ phaeton.
Mr. Leigh the rector, and Mr.
and Mrs. Goldsmid in waiting, he (Mr. Goldsmid) and Mariana and myself being
the sponsors for the little Mariana Percy Belcombe, called at my request, after
Mariana – The child behaved remarkably well –
After the ceremony, called
and sat a little while with the Goldsmids who have been for these last few days
at the Roebuck Inn previous to their going to their place in Monmouthshire –
Just before dinner, had my hair
cut and dressed by Mr. Williams, who did it very nicely –
Mariana and I made our little
goddaughter a joint present of a silver knife and fork and spoon in a case, and
a little silver drinking cup – Altogether
price five pounds. π bought them the
other day at Liverpool –
Dinner at 4 1/2 – Mr. and
Mrs. Meeke and Mr. and Mrs. Godsmidt and Miss Assar and a young man, a Mr. Hassells,
dined with us – the Meekes went away about 8 – the Goldsmids and Miss Assar staid
till near 11 and then took leave, meaning to leave Newcastle early in the morning
–
Mr. Goldsmid (Lionel) shewed
us a great many capital tricks done quite as well as Ingelby would have done them,
and very good humouredly gave me his pack of conjuring cards – cut at the edges for the sake of doing the
tricks –
Came upstairs at 11 – Sat up
talking – Fine day –
