Three last night, one after another, without once separating –

Harriet not much better of her sick headache, and did not come downstairs till dinnertime – Sat by her bedside for a few minutes soon after breakfast – This is the anniversary of her 30th birthday –

π [Mariana] and I talked matters over.  We have agreed to solemnize our promise of mutual faith by taking the sacrament together when we next meet at Shibden, not thinking it proper to use any still more binding ceremony during L’s [Charles Lawton’s] life.  Talked matters thoroughly over during our walk.  I should live with my aunt.  If Marian does not marry, she must have a home with us and I thought I could eventually make up fifteen hundred a year.  L will probably make up π’s income eight.

She’s ever thought herself in a family way but once, just before Mrs. Smith left her.  Three months without the menstrual discharge, and then, frightened by Watson’s falling downstairs, she felt a sudden rush and parted with a quantity of thickish red and white matter that looked nasty, something like rotten eggs.  I fancied it a false conception and her mother had had the same idea –

One thing or other led to what I never heard before, that she parted with the membrane of virginity about a fortnight after she was married.  Both L and she saw it on the sheet.  I said how this was unexpected to me, who fancied it had been broken by our previous connection –

Mariana and I went out about 1 – Went for a few minutes to Smith’s – He asked me 12 shillings (the lowest) for Stackhouse’s edition of Theophrastus, in boards, Oxford, 1 volume, large thick duodecimo – and five shillings for Nicholson’s Instructor in Drawing the 4 Orders of Architecture, 1 thin volume octavo, published 6 or 7 years ago, with several plates –

Went to another shop or 2, walked along the new public walks, and crossed the Canal, and walked a good way along a lane, and came in about 3 1/2 –

π gave Harriet a rastrick shawl, price thirty shillings.  she, π, was cutting me out a habit shirt in the evening –

From 8 to 9, out in the field with Steph, shooting with his bow and arrows – His bow draws sixty pounds and would cost 2 guineas in London, whence he had had arrows at the rate of twelve for a guinea.

Mariana and I won 3 sixpenny points at whist of Steph and Harriet –

Fine day –
