Dullish morning.  Fahrenheit 42° inside at 8 20/.. and breakfast – Sat talking till after 10 had struck, then at my rough book accounts (Fahrenheit 41 1/2 outside at 10 1/2 a.m.) till 1 40/.. – Changed my pelisse –

Off to church at 1 55/.. At the school in 1/4 hour – It began to rain soon after 12 and rained more or less from then to near 5 – Mr. Horsfall did all the duty – preached 1/2 hour very fairly from Ephesians II, part of verse 1.  Dead in trespasses and sins – Let the dead bury their dead – Our Saviour probably meant the living people, dead in trespasses and sins, as the dead who were to bury their dead –

Miss (Millhouse Mary) Rawson at church – Went with me in the carriage to Cliff hill while Ann staid at the boys’ school to hear them repeat their psalms in order to their receiving the Wharton bibles – 1/2 hour at Cliff hill – Ann there 8 or 10 minutes – Mrs. Ann Walker seeming the same as last Sunday –

Home at 4 55/.. – nearly 1/2 hour with Ann in her room – Read a few pages, Volume 1, Murray’s Pyrenees, to page 259 –

Dinner at 6 5/..Ann read French before leaving the dining room –

Note from Mr. Parker, wishing my answer to note, of which Mr. Parker sends copy – Messers Norris and Rudd.  ‘Mr. Bull instructs them to institute proceedings if the money is not forthwith paid.  Will therefore thank you to send us a cheque for the money on Monday next or we must consider your client intends to resist payment’ –

Read a little of the newspaper of tonight – Vide page 5, column 6, Quain’s Anatomical Plates – the 67 fasciculus published being the 18th of its illustrations of the nerves –

Read with Ann partly aloud, and looked at maps the 1st 2 chapters, i.e. 58 pages, Volume 1, Keppel Craven’s Excursions in the Abruzzi – Wrote all the above of today till 10 1/4 –

Came upstairs at 10 1/2, at which hour, 41 1/4° inside and 36° outside ten minutes afterwards – Very showery from about (after) noon for the rest of the day –

1835 September Saturday 26 8 12 1/4 No kiss. Rain last night from between 11 and 12 to after one – Rainy morning, but not heavy rain till near 9, then fair and F 55° – Breakfast at 9 1/4 – Ann getting off her speech for the first stone laying and I writing out mine.   Put on my new pelisse and had my hair done – Marian was to have gone to the 1st stone laying, but got nervous and staid at home – Ann and I off at 10 3/4 in my own carriage with our 2 men behind, to Northgate hotel – Not quite ready for us – Began looking over the drawings of Northgate, and, by mistake, kept the people waiting and did not begin the ceremony till about 11 3/4, which lasted about 1/4 hour – Ann did her part very well – the coins of the king’s reign (William iv) i.e. a sovereign 1/2 ditto, 1/2 crown, shilling, and sixpence ( Could not get a 7/. piece; very scarce – Swanns, the bankers in York, had only seen two of William iv 7/. pieces) were put into a large mouthed green glass bott...

Saturday, July 13, 1839 Travel Journal

1839 July Saturday 13 3 3/4 Fine morning – Fahrenheit 73° at 4 1/4 a.m. – Off at 5 – At Quickvorn [Quickborn] at 7 10/.. – Good cultivation, grass and corn about Hamburg – Asleep – at 5 10/..,   Stopt 10 minutes – At Quickborn, asleep – Not much of a place – Paid as might be – Some moor about 1/2 way between Hamburg and Quickborn and ditto ditto between Quickborn and Bramstedt, nice little rather scattered picturesque town where we stopt to breakfast from 9 20/.. to 10 50/.. – coffee – little cups and milk as in England and bread and butter – 1 mark each – Nice, clean public room and nice, civil people, but as usual could not, through Gross, understand the money till a civil English speaking Dane came in, who explained to me intelligibly – Now at 11 1/4 = 6 1/4 meilen to Kiel –  Just as we came away, the Eilwagen Diligence arrived – 5 or 6 gentlemen had come in, one or more ladies seemed to be still in the diligence – 3 compartments or divisions as in Fran...

Tuesday, July 14, 1829

1829 July 14th Tuesday 5 20/60   /   12 5/60 A cross last night thinking of Mariana.   Left for the post my letter written last night to Mr. James Briggs, Horton Street, Halifax, Yorkshire, Angleterre.   Gave George several commissions to do, to order horses at 2 1/4 etc. etc. and to be at the Jardin on my leaving the chemical lecture at 10 20/60. Breakfast at 6 20/60.   Walked to the boulevard, then per fiacre to the Jardin des Plantes in 34 minutes at 7 34/60.   The door shut.   Could   not go into the gallery, so missed the botanical lecture and walked about.   Sat some time reading lesson 35 Chimie Générale, then went up to the belvidere or temple and stood there 1/2 hour looking about me enjoying the fine view over and around Paris.   W ent into the Amphitheatre at 9 10/60. 35th chemical lecture began at 9 20/60; came away at 10 20/60.     24th lecture on the mollusques from 10 1/2 to 11 3/4, then 18th geologica...
