July

Sunday 22

7 1/2

1 1/2

Service at the parish church by the rector, Mr. Leigh, at 10 1/2:  He preached a very dull sermon, 40 minutes from the epistle of St. Peter i. 14 and 2 following verses.

Steph and I and the children went, but Harriet staid at home on account of the damp and occasionally rainy morning –

Wrote a page to my aunt (Shibden) before breakfast, and immediately on my return, wrote two  pages more, the ends, and under the seal, and sent it off to go by the mail at 2 –

Took a turn or 2 in the garden with Mrs. H. S. B. [Harriet] –

Had given up expecting Mariana, when she arrived at 4 1/2 in the carriage – Looking well, much improved in appearance since I saw her last in York 1 1/2 years ago –

Mr. and Mrs. Goldsmid and Miss Assar dined here and staid till after 10 –

π's [Mariana's]coming made me rather nervous, and I therefore took two glasses wine and one after dinner.  She and I sat up talking.  Gave her to read the copy of my poetic epistle to Harriet Milne.  She feared it was not severe enough, and then told me all about her conduct with Captain Wallace of the fourth dragoon guards.  Find it worse than heard of before.  Louisa has none or little doubt of her having been connected with him.  The man’s name whom she appointed to meet her at the rooms last winter but one was Blake Mariana thinks – I am thoroughly convinced of π's attachment and devotion to me, and have said all to comfort and reconcile her to our situation –

Dampish and at intervals rainyish day though fine in the evening – Came upstairs perhaps about 11 1/2 –
