Before breakfast, did from page
326, Planes and Solids, to theorem 104, page 332, Volume 1, Hutton; i.e., 9
theorems – Theorem 103 took me a good while; never having done anything before
at planes and solids, I am a little puzzled with the diagrams, with the conceiving
them representations of solids –
Letter from Mrs. Henry
Stephens Belcombe (Newcastle, Staffordshire) The clergyman has convinced her of the ‘impropriety
and sinfulness’ of delaying the christening, and she urges my going as soon as
possible –
Came upstairs at 11 – All the morning looking over my drawers and
seeing that my things were ready to go from home –
Between 12 and 1, Miss Anne
Walker and her brother (of Crow Nest) called, and staid 1/2 hour. They are all going to Scarborough for 3 weeks
on Saturday –
Between 2 and 3, wrote 2 1/2 pages
to Mariana to tell her of my letter from Harriet, and that I proposed going on
Wednesday by the mail unless she (Mariana) determined me otherwise, on which
account, I would wait till Saturday morning to hear from her before answering Harriet’s
letter. Sent my letter to Mariana
(Lawton) about 3 1/2 this afternoon –
Went downstairs at 5 1/2 – In
the evening from 7 40/60 to 9, down the old bank to Miss Kitson’s – thence to Northgate,
staid 5 minutes, and on my return, sauntered along the new road –
Fine day – Barometer 1 1/4
degree above changeable. Fahrenheit 61°
at 9 25/60 p.m. –
Came upstairs at 10 40/60 – Looking
over my volumes of extracts fancying I had something on the derivation of the words
giant and genius, but it seems I was mistaken –
