February
Tuesday 26
7 1/2
12 3/4
Fine morning; Fahrenheit 41
1/2° inside at 8 50/.. and Fahrenheit 40° outside at 9 10/..
Making and looking over memoranda
– Breakfast at 9 10/.. in about (less than) 1/2 hour –
Then had Booth about estimate
for Halifax fields walls repairing = £25.2.0 – left him with Ann –
and I off to Listerwick at 10 1/4 – John’s pantry floor taken up this
morning to be levelled –
At Listerwick, ordered about
the underground brick flue gathering up into the square (stone) high chimney – Had
the flue made quite independent of the chimney – The latter being walled up square
on two 5-inch thick pieces (one above the other) of good strong stone on the
top of but independent of the flue – Sent Joseph Mann with George to Sunwood
quarry to see for the 2 pieces of stone – Had the square corners of the square
chimney gathered up rounded to a point above and below the original setting on
of the square chimney on to the round shaft – The top of the flue is about 6 feet
below the foot of the square chimney –
At home at 11 1/2 – A little
while about in the farm yard, and a few minutes with Ann – till Messers Samuel
Freeman and Oates came about 11 3/4 – I very civil – Glad to see Freeman –
Said I had been wanting to see him to beg him to get up his quantity of stone
in Yew Trees wood as soon as he possibly could.
This he promised to do – Said he had raised the men a penny a yard (flag
dressing I suppose) but could not get them to work – Then, said I, raise them 2
pence – Well! Then where should he be … But he had come on another subject
– It was reported he had behaved very ill to the Manns – He should be sorry for
me to think so – Would tell me how it was – He had not sought them – He
should have preferred Townsend, who bid within ten pounds of them, but he left
it to Mr. Mitchell, and he let it to the Manns –
