July
Tuesday 17
7 1/2
12 1/4
Before breakfast till 9 1/4
at the new road – They are putting the capping stones on the near wall – Walked
just beyond Mytholm and met Jackman –
Mr. Ramsden, the attorney,
called to speak to my uncle, that I came upstairs at 10 35/60 – From this to near three, planning about
afternoon handkerchiefs etc. I am sick
of all this and wish I had anyone to do it for me, but all things have an end,
and surely I shall by and by get a style of dress that suits me without further
trouble –
In the afternoon at 3 35/60,
set off to Halifax. Called at the
Cunnery at Matty Pollard’s, thence down the old bank to the Saltmarshes’. Sat with Emma till 5 1/2; thence to Miss Kitson’s;
and to the White Lion, to see that my place was taken in the mail from Manchester
for next Friday –
Emma is to write to me immediately
on their arrival at Cheltenham, and I have 1/2 promised to go to them for a
couple of days – I have not, though, much
intention of going, almost think I was foolish to name it, and do not feel
satisfied after my visit this afternoon.
Went direct from the Cunnery to Rawson's bank. Saw Mr. Christopher Rawson. Gave him the two fifteen pound notes π
[Mariana] sent me the other day. Took his receipt for twenty pounds and
received two five pounds which I meant to keep in case of accident for the
present –
In the evening from 7 40/60 to
9, sauntering with my aunt along the new road, as far as Mytholm, by Lower
brea, along the Brook Ing to Godley, and thence by the fields home –
Fine day – Barometer 4 degrees
above changeable. Fahrenheit 60° at 9
1/4 p.m. –
Came upstairs at 10 50/60 writing a rough draft account of the dates
of the money I have received from π and what I have of my own in Rawson’s bank
– Three quarters hour over this and looking at my receipts and the list of sporting
ladies at Newcastle five years ago –
